A very young and talented member of the Kokiri tribe. He is very unusual for a Kokiri simply because of his unusual amount of courage, strength, and also because he does not have a fairy companion. Some say Link doesn’t even look like a Kokiri. Link is ten years old and is best friends with a young girl named Saria. Once Link is summoned by the Great Deku Tree, a sprite called Navi accompanies him for his great adventure.

OCARINA OF TIME, STORY 1
Before time was time, three great goddesses decended upon the chaos that was and created the land of Hyrule; Din, goddess of power, Nayru, goddess of wisdom and Farore, the godess of courage.
Din, using great magical flames, created the land, the sea, and all the minerals which would be scattered along the length, breadth and height of this new world; in doing so, she gave this new world the materials it could exist with. Nayru poured out her rich soul and gave the Spirit of Law onto the world, so that rivers would flow and the sun and moon would rise and fall with each day; this allowed Hyrule to have the knowledge by which it could exist. And finally, Farore then created all the lifeforms which would uphold the law, from the tinest of insects to the largest and most powerful of animals; this gave Hyrule the will to exist.
The three great Goddesses, their labours completed, then departed for the Heavans. However, at the point where the Goddesses left their new creation, they each left behind a golden triangle which contained the essense of their power. This mighty artefact, called the Triforce, though able to grant extremely powerful magic to whoever touched it, was infinitely delicate: if one who did not hold all three aspects of the Triforce - power, wisdom and courage - within perfect balance, the Triforce would split into its three aspects and the person who first touched the Triforce would be left and only one force would remain in his hand: the force which he most believed in. The remaining two aspects would take refuge within the hearts and minds of two who best personified the remaining aspects of the Triforce.
It was for this reason that seven Ancient Sages, at least one representing each of Hyrule's races, decided to hide the Triforce within a hidden Sacred Realm using a complex magical seal. Firstly, the only gate to the Sacred Realm would be the magnificent Temple of Time within Hyrule Town. In order for the magical door to be opened, one would have to hold the three Spiritual Stones of Fire, Water and the Forest. Then, they would have to play the sacred Song of Time on a magical instrument, the Ocarina of Time. Only then would the great stone Door of Time open, to reveal.....the Master Sword, standing within the Pedastal of Time. This was the final key needed to open he gate to the Sacred Realm; only one with a heart and mind devoid of any evil would be able to lift such a blade. This complex seal ensured only the most determined of seekers could have a hope of obtaining the Triforce, and that those who did enter the Sacred Realm could only do so with entirely good intentions.
Though complex, this seal was necessary due to an age-old prophecy: if one with a pure heart obtains the Triforce, Hyrule would be led into a new age of peace and prosperity. But if an evil-hearted person obtained the Triforce, then he would begin a Great Cataclysm. Only the one who held the Master Sword would be able to stand against the man who began the Great Cataclysm.
The six races of Hyrule were: the Hylia, the Goddesses' chosen people; the Sheikah, or the Shadow Folk; the Gerudo, a race of women; the rock-eating Gorons; the fish-like Zora; and the Kokiri, called the Forest or Fairy Folk. The humanoid races, with their long, pointed ears, were said to be able to hear special messages from the gods.
Most of Hyrule consisted of the vast, open plains of Hyrule Field. Though travelling through these plains was necessary to reach Hyrule's major landmarks, they were seldom travelled along by at night as monsters often came to attack travellers who were not along the main travelling routes. Travellers who were attacked and lost their gear, or who became lost along in Hyrule Field, reported seeing a large yet lighthearted owl calling himself Kaepora Gaebora who would help travellers to reach their destinations. Rumours soon circulated that this mysterious owl is the reincarnation of an Ancient Sage.
A place called Lon Lon Ranch was soon built in the centre of Hyrule Field for the purposes of breeding horses and cattle to trade. Lon Lon Ranch became the only ranch in Hyrule.
The Hylia, as the gods' chosen people, were endowed witih great psychic powers and skill in wizardry, and an even greater skill in science. This noble race lived in the far north of Hyrule, in a prosperous city named Hyrule Town. Due to the respect the Hylia commanded as the gods' chosen people, the Hylian Royal Family were the rulers of the entire country of Hyrule. It was the Royal Family of Hyrule who held, as their hidden treasure, the Ocarina of Time.
Slightly east of Hyrule Town there was, in the shadow of Death Mountain, a smaller town called Kakariko Village, where the Sheikah lived; swearing allegance to the Hylia, the Sheikah posessed an even greater skill in the magical arts than the Hylia. This place was closed to anyone other than the Shadow folk, who lived their lives in the shadows of the Hylians, serving the Royal Family of Hyrule as bodyguards and attendants. Many mysterious and so-called Gossip Stones, which are littered throughout Hyrule, bore the markings of the Sheikah race, but exactly how that mysterious race placed them there is a mystery.
In the far west of Hyrule there lay little more than a baron desert, and it was at the edge of this desert that the Gerudo race made their home. The Gerudo culture centred on combat, using both standard weapons and magical powers.
The Gerudo were often seen by other races looking for boyfriends, as only one Gerudo would be born a male every 100 years. This Gerudo would, during his childhood, be taken to a Spirit Temple where he would be schooled in the mystic arts by two sorceress sisters, Koume and Kotake Twinrova. After being taught spells and incantations which would otherwise be taught only to the most diciplined of wizards, this male Gerudo would rule his race as King. During the years without a King to rule, a Royal Regent would be elected by the Gerudo to keep order.
Within the many caves which were within the active volcano of Death Mountain, there lived the Gorons. The Gorons' source of food was the many minerals which they mined from Death Mountain. Master blacksmiths, the Gorons also traded a crop called Bomb Flowers, which grew only in the darkest caves of Death Mountain. The Spiritual Stone of Fire, which became known as the Goron Ruby, was the hidden treasure of the Gorons. According to Goron legend, a subterranean lava dragon named Volvagia once tried to burn Hyrule to ashes, but a mighty Goron hero used a Megaton Hammer to destroy the dragon and save Hyrule.
Further east, just before the forbidden Lost Woods, there was Zora's Domain. It was from here that all the water in Hyrule began its journey along the perimeter of the country, proving nourishment to all life forms before coming to rest at Lake Hylia in the south-west. The guardians of this water were the Zora; part human and part fish, the Zora could spend only limited periods of time outside of water. The Zoras worshipped their guardian spirit, a large fish named Lord Jabu-Jabu, and held as their hidden treasure the Spiritual Stone of Water, or the Zora Sapphire.
Finally, in the far east of Hyrule, there was the forbidden Lost Woods; the path leading to this forest ended with the notice ABANDON HOPE ALL YE WHO ENTER.The magical air which blew through this mysterious forest meant that any who entered could only do so for less than a full cycle of the sun and moon, before they would be transformed into skeleton-like monsters. Only those who were permitted by this forest's guardian spirit, the Great Deku Tree, would be able to enter the forest for longer periods of time. Those who overstayed their welcome in the Lost Woods made up a small village hidden far within these woods, and were only seen by the Kokiri, who made their home in the Lost Woods and had as their hidden treasure the Spiritual Stone of the Forest, or the Kokiri Emerald. However, Hyrule's times during the years were not safe; endless wars and civil strife continued to prevail. The many races of Hyrule had forgotten many of the laws which the gods had left them with. Though none would ever admit it, each ruler secretly sought the keys to the Sacred Realm so that they could have their chance of obtaining the power of the gods. However, the precise knowledge of how to obtain the Triforce had been lost and distorted over time; only the Royal Family of Hyrule were known to have the uncorrupted story. It is little wonder, then, that most of these conflicts ended in stalemates. Perhaps the bloodiest of battles which came during this war was a sudden, violent attack on Hyrule Town. Though the Hylian Army fought vallantly, both attackers and defenders lost heavily that day. Though the Hylian lines held, even the Hyrulian King lost his life to an assassin's arrow. Following this battle, Hyrule Town became the most protected settlement in the land....and many began to feel that the time of peace was long overdue, yet no ruler would be game enough to be the first to say they were wrong. With the tyrannical Hyrulian King dead from that battle, his son took the throne. The new King of Hyrule had a heart with a perfect balance of power, wisdom and courage. With his great military prowess, he assembled an army like none Hyrule had ever seen before. He then studied the Book of Mudora, a most ancient text, which had every script relating to the history of Hyrule within it. So sacred was this book that only the leaders of races were permitted to read it. After over a decade of long, stable peace, there was a male born to the Gerudo by the name of Ganondorf Dragmire. Though the Gerudo masses proclaimed him as their hero, as was expected, the now former Royal Regent Nabooru soon grew distrustful of Ganondorf. She tried to warn other Gerudo as to the evil of Ganondorf, but all dismissed it as simply sour grapes from Nabooru losing her position as chief Gerudo.
Though few had ever seen a Kokiri, they were famous for the guardian they each had, who accompanied each Kokiri from birth until death. The Kokiri were the children of the forest, whose lives were made possible through the Great Deku Tree. The fairies which each Kokiri had helped protect them from the magic of the Lost Woods, though it also caused the Kokiri to remain no older than their pre-teens. However, since it was the spirits of the forest who gave life to the Kokiri, if any Kokiri were to leave the forest their lives would come to an end.
The Hylia, exploiting their position as the gods' chosen people, fought for little more than putting all the other races under their heel. The Sheikah, sworn servants of the Hylian Royal Family, became just as hated as the Hylia themselves, but were oppressed by the same people they served. The Gerudo became little more than a race of thieves, and often raped their male victims in an effort to continue their kind. The Zora threatened drought or impure water to all of Hyrule should any race dare oppose their wishes. All races wished for posession of the rich minerals atop Death Mountain, but the Gorons defended their food source with their powerful weapons, which only the strongest of armour or the most powerful of magic could stand against.
Every race gave themselves a reason to be hated, yet none would do anything to turn the tide. Only the Kokiri, safely sheltered by the magic of the Lost Woods, were safe from the horrors.
One Hylian mother, whose husband had been killed in the conflicts, resigned herself to the fact that the fighting could never cease. The only safe haven, she then decided, would be to enter the Lost Woods and beg to the forest spirits for mercy. Herself gravely wounded, she took her infant son and mounted a deserted horse, heading for the forbidden forest. Though the Great Deku Tree granted both mother and son protection from the forest's magic, the mother died soon after from her injuries. Her son, the Deku Tree decided, would be raised as a Kokiri.
Using the laws of the gods as a template, the new King now summoned together the leaders of the warring races in an effort to end the wars once and for all. With this good news reaching them, rulers from far and wide travelled to attend the conferences: Nabooru, Royal Regent of the Gerudos; King Zora XVI of the Zoras and Darunia, chief of the Gorons. The Sheikah were now all but extinct, from both combat and overwork, and so were left out of this gathering. The Kokiri were also not summonded, since they had no involvement in the wars.
Under the King's wise diplomacy, and a yearning from all other leaders for peace, any foundations upon which war could have sprung were shaken to the ground. Agreements were signed that none could take anything from Death Mountain without the permission of the Gorons; that the Zoras would be responsible for keeping Hyrule's water clean and safe to drink. Though it was agreed that the Gerudo would not use their warrior skills for dishonourable purposes, Nabooru warned that much of the Gerudo culture centred on one's ability as a thief and could make no promises that her people would behave.
After 50 years of ceaseless combat, all of Hyrule welcomed the overdue peace. The Hylia, though the dominent people of Hyrule, were kind and tolerant of the needs of their neighbouring races. The Gerudos were now, though somewhat anti-male and pro-violence, still a peaceful and kind race who were amongst the most mild-mannered. The Gorons became extremely wealthy through their trading in metalwork, minerals and their unique Bomb Flowers. The Zoras, since they could not venture for very long out of water, were still not seen far from their home or from Lake Hylia. With the Sheikah homeland of Kakariko Village soon becoming less-than-livable due to a lack of upkeep, perhaps the last surviving Sheikah Impa, attendant to the newborn Hylian Princess Zelda, opened the village to all who would wish to come.
As tradition demanded, Ganondorf traversed the Haunted Wasteland to the great Spirit Temple to be educated by the sorceress sisters, Koume and Kotake Twinrova. Ganondorf was a determined student, studying hard and learning quickly; he was never devoured by impatience, taking his time to learn the complex spells which a Gerudo King must know.
As the time grew near for Ganondorf's official coronation, he was required to learn the verses from the sacred Book of Mudora, held with such respect that the Gerudo copy of this book was only permitted to be read by a Gerudo King. Within this book were the accounts of the Triforce and how it became hidden. Within these texts, Ganondorf found one verse which warranted particular attention:
| In realm beyond sight, The sky shines gold, not blue; There, the Triforce's might, Makes mortal dreams come true. |
Every citizen of Hyrule, from royalty to peasantry, knew of the Triforce and the legends of how to obtain it. But it was only thought that the Triforce could merely grant powerful magic, not make one's deepest dreams come true! Ganondorf made particular note to remember what was required: the three Spiritual Stones held by the Gorons, Zora and Kokiri and the Ocarina of Time.
Hmm....Ganondorf could easily obtain the Zora Sapphire, simply by having some form of letter to prove he was a messanger of the King of Hyrule. That would be easy, since he would soon have to travel to Hyrule Castle to assure the King of Hyrule the peace treaties stood true during Ganondorf's reign. And while he was there, he would find some way of obtaining the Ocarina of Time, even if it meant taking hostage the King's daughter, Princess Zelda....
As for the Goron Ruby, well...the Gorons may be master craftsman, but they lacked a lot of common sense. He should be able to convince them to hand over the ruby without too many hassles. Gaining the Kokiri Emerald would be somewhat difficult; Ganondorf would need the permission of the Great Deku Tree in order to obtain what he needed.
En route to travelling to Hyrule Castle to meet with the King of Hyrule, Ganondorf made a detour to Death Mountain. There he approached the Goron chief Darunia, asking for the Spiritual Stone. However, Darunia was not as foolish as Ganondorf expected, and when Darunia refused Ganondorf's request, the Gerudo King closed the entrance to the Gorons' main mine, Dodongo's Cavern.
Hoping for better luck with the Kokiri Emerald, Ganondorf used his magic to communicate to the Great Deku Tree without entering the Lost Woods, and so avoiding the forest's magical air. Asking for the Spiritual Stone the Deku Tree posessed, the living tree sensed Ganondorf's evil intentions and refused. Ganondorf could easily solve that: using his magic, Ganondorf placed a death-curse upon the Great Deku Tree which could only be removed by destroying the monsters which now lived underneath the tree.
Ganondorf now set his sights to Hyrule Castle: soon, he will have found a way to obtain the Triforce!
The Great Deku Tree, now cursed to die before the sun set that day, would not give in so easily. It knew that there was more at stake here than simply losing the sacred Kokiri Emerald. No, it would not give in. All of these events had been forseen, and he would play his role in destiny's coming story without fear or favour, selfishness or sloath.
From the moment the Deku Tree saw the Kokiri named Link, he had known the boy had a powerful role to play in destiny. Link, the sole person to enter this forest without a guardian fairy, and yet be able to remain unaffected by the magic of the Lost Woods or survive leaving the safety of the forest.
The Deku Tree summoned the young fairy Navi; though Navi was only a young fairy and did not have the experience or knowledge which usually befitted a Kokiri's guardian fairy, the Deku Tree had no say in the matter. All that would occur now was already decided, and if the Deku Tree were to deviate from this road than untold damage could have happened.
Navi came as instructed, the Deku Tree urging her to find and bring Link before him. Navi left at once for the forest clearing where the Kokiri made their village.
When Navi found Link early this morning, he was waking from a nightmare. It was the same nightmare Link had been having every night these past few weeks...
Link was standing on an open plain, with few trees in sight. A large stone wall stood in front of him, just over a stream. As he stood there, motionless and alone, part of the stone wall came down, lower and lower. As it came to its lowest point, Link saw that that this part of the wall was made of wood. With this wooden portion down, it now formed a bridge over the stream, and a path into what looked like a strange village.
Suddenly, a large white creatre with four legs went galloping out of the village and past Link. A young girl was on the back of this animal, held by a larger woman. For a moment the girl looked like he wanted to tell Link something, but by the time the girl vanished into the darkness it was too late. Link heard another noise coming from the entrance to the strange village. He looked around: another of the strange animals, this one black and powerful, with a strange man on top of it, with an evil look in his eyes.
What happened next Link did not know, as it was at this point that he would awaken.
When Link discovered that at last he had a guardian fairy, both himself and his friends were overjoyed. Despite the bullying of Kokiri chief Mido, Link proceeded to the Deku Tree and learned of the curse which had been placed on the Guardian Spirit. Link, armed with a sword and shield, entered the Deku Tree and destroyed the parasitic armoured arachnid there which was the source of the curse.
Despite Link's efforts, the Deku Tree was still moments from death. However, the Great Deku Tree's life was not in vain: the Deku Tree told Link of an evil man from the desert who placed the curse upon him, and that this man had done so in a quest for the Triforce. The Deku Tree also told Link the story of the Triforce, and why this desert man should never lay his hands upon the Triforce. Furthermore, Link should travel to Hyrule Castle and meet the princess there. The Great Deku Tree also gave Link the Kokiri Emerald for safekeeping.
These were the last words of the Great Deku Tree, before it whithered and died. Link decided to make his journey to the castle, though none of the other Kokiri had any idea where this castle was. As Link left, Kokiri chief Mido accused Link of doing something wrong to the Deku Tree, causing it to die. Link's best friend Saria, however, realised this was Link's destiny and gave him a momento to remember her by.
Link journeyed west and out of the forest, both himself and Navi surprised that Link had survived. Did the Great Deku Tree have the power to permit a Kokiri to leave the forest? Or had the Great Deku Tree's death allowed the Kokiri to enter and leave the Lost Woods as they chose? Link decided not to ponder on these questions, but rather to find his way to Hyrule Castle. How he would reach there was beyond him, out of the sheer size of the field he must now cross.
Soon after leaving the Lost Woods, the owl named Kaepora Gaebora flew to Link and offered to show him the way to Hyrule Castle. Kaepora led Link to the entrance of Hyrule Town, telling Link to continue north to reach Hyrule Castle. Link felt unnerved upon reaching Hyrule Town, for it was the same location he saw in his nightmares. Nontheless Link pressed on, learning much from the Hylians by overhearing gossip: the Princess of Hyrule was named Zelda, attended by possibly the last of the Sheikah. Princess Zelda also saw visions of the future in her dreams.
Making friends with a young girl named Malon, daughter of Lon Lon Ranch owner Talon, Link proceeded to Hyrule Castle. He spoke with the gatekeeper, but the guards would not allow Link into the palace to see the Princess. Driven by his need to fulfil the Deku Tree's dying wish, Link used the agility and hunting skills he learned growing up in the forest to break into the castle courtyard.
Inside the courtyard, Link found a young girl apparently spying on something inside the castle. This girl, who soon introduced herself as Princess Zelda, saw Navi and immediately deduced that Link was from the forest. Zelda explained that in her most recent dream, black clouds gathered from the desert and reached accross Hyrule. A bright light grew from the forest and forced these clouds back, the light turning into a figure holding the Kokiri Emerald.
Zelda explained her mistrust of the Gerudo King, who had recently come to Hyrule Castle. Zelda had already decided that Ganondorf was after the Triforce, and so she explained the legends of how to unlock the Sacred Realm to Link; but even these legends were obscure, and made no mention of the Master Sword. The two youngsters planned to recover the keys to the Sacred Realm; Zelda would safeguard the Ocarina of Time while Link went in search of the Spiritual Stones. They would then enter the Sacred Realm and protect the Triforce from Ganondorf themselves.
Zelda's attendant, the Sheikah Impa, escorted Link out of Hyrule Town and taught him the Song of the Royal Family in case Link had to prove a royal connection. Link set off for Death Mountain and to the Goron City, meeting with their chief Darunia. Darunia did have the Spiritual Stone, but explained that Ganondorf had sealed off the entrance to the Gorons' main mine in an effort to gain the stone as well. Link reopened the entrance to the mine and destroyed the monsters there, winning Darunia's favour and earning the Goron Ruby.
With half of his quest complete, Link now travelled to Zora's Domain and the location of the Spiritual Stone of Water. Link did not have time to ask King Zora for the stone, since the Zoras were all paniking that their princess, Ruto, had gone missing. Link joined the search, and found Princess Ruto in the belly of the Zora's Guardian Spirit, Lord Jabu-Jabu. Ruto gave the Zora Sapphire to Link for rescuing her, though Link wasn't paying attention when Ruto explained that in giving the Sapphire to Link, Ruto had decided that Link would someday be her husband.
Link returned to Hyrule Town, though by the time he arrived night had fallen and the drawbridge leading into the town had closed. Before Link had a chance to look around for shelter for the night, the drawbridge lowered. A strong white hrose ran by, Impa in control of the animal while carrying Princess Zelda away. Link thought he saw the Princess throw something which landed in the moat. Link heard a second horse behind him, looked up and saw Ganondorf Dragmire mounted upon his solid black Gerudo stallion. Ganondorf tried to get Link to say where the Princess had ridden to, but Link's only reply was to draw his sword. Link's threat was worse than useless, Ganondorf using his magic to knock the boy aside before riding off to look for Zelda himself.
When day next broke, Link asked the citizens of Hyrule Town what had happened. No-one knew anything, only that a white horse had fled from the castle while being persued by a black horse. Several people reconised the riders of the white horse being Princess Zelda and her attendant Impa, and none of the guards of Hyrule Castle would say anything about the previous day. Link found one guard in a back alley of the town, dying from his wounds; Ganondorf Dragmire betrayed the King of Hyrule, attempting to kidnap Princess Zelda. Link learned little else before the guard died of his injuries.
Link returned to the moat outside Hyrule Town, remembering he thought her saw the Princess throw something at him. Slightly downstream, pulled by the current, Link found the bright blue Ocarina of Time. A telepathic message from Zelda filled Link's mind: Ganondorf attacked the Royal Family of Hyrule, and Zelda had to be evacuated by Impa. Zelda wanted to wait for Link, but there was simply no time left. Zelda taught the Song of Time to Link, begging him to enter the Sacred Realm and protect the Triforce.
Link went to the Temple of Time, placing the Spiritual Stones in their slots and playing the Song of Time on the ocarina Zelda had left for him. The Door of Time opened, and Link walked through and found the Master Sword. Since this room was otherwise bare, Link decided there was nothing else to do but lift the sword from its pedastel.
The last sound Link heard was the roaring laughter of Ganondorf Dragmire.
When Link came to, he found himself in a strange blue environment. The only other person there was a man in bright red and orange robes, who called himself Rauru. Rauru explained that Link was in the Chamber of the Sages within the Temple of Light, the resting place of the Triforce. Rauru explained that the Master Sword could only be pulled from the Pedastel of Time by one chosen by the Master Sword itself. Though Link was this personhe was still too young to use the blade, and so the Master Sword sealed him within the Sacred Realm for seven years so that Link could age into an adult.
However, during that time the Master Sword was still free of the Pedastel of Time, and the gate between Hyrule and the Sacred Realm was still open. Ganondorf had followed Link to the Temple, and since there was nothing left to stop him Ganondorf had captured the Triforce. Using its power, Ganondorf killed the good King of Hyrule and took his place. With the Triforce behind him, there was no-one who could stand in his way.
There is, Rauru offered, a way: the seven Sages of the Triforce will be able to draw Ganondorf into an Evil Realm and seal him there forever. Rauru himself is the Ancient Sage of Light, but all of the other Sages has since passed away. There are six Chosen Ones, one among each of Hyrule's races, remaining to become the next Sages.
Rauru returned Link to Hyrule, to within the Temple of Time. Here, Link was met by a masked man calling himself Sheik, the last of the Sheikah race. Knowing the prophecies surrounding the capture of the Triforce by an evil one, Zelda's attendant Impa came to the Temple of Time every day, waiting for Link. Impa has since grown frail, and Sheik has come in her place.
Sheik explains that an awakening voice has summoned the six remaining Sages to the various Temples in Hyrule, but Ganondorf has since siezed these Temples. Due to the evil magic in the Temples, the Sages cannot answer their call. Link must reach these Temples and destroy the monsters dwelling there so that the Sages can answer their call.
Link decided to first return to his home of the Lost Woods to reach his old friends. Navi did not at first trust these prophecies, reminding Link that the Kokiri do not age. Link reconsidered: had the Great Deku Tree, in permitting Link to leave the Lost Woods, sacrificed his immortality as well? Or had the Great Deku Tree's death, as well as permitting the Kokiri to leave the Lost Woods, had caused him to age?
When Link reached the Lost Woods, he found it overrun by monsters of every description. Link met with the other Kokiri, only to find that none of his companions had aged and that they rejected him as a Kokiri. Navi used this point to further bring up her mistrust of Link's current situation, but Link thought further and determined that the Master Sword's power was perhaps stronger than that of the forest spirits in causing Link to age.
Link proceeded to the Forest Temple, in the heart of the Lost Woods. Destroying the monsters dwelling there, including a phantasm of Ganondorf himself, a portal to the Sacred Realm opened within the Temple. Link's best friend Saria was the one who heard the awakening call and became the Forest Sage. With the evil gone from the Lost Woods, a new Deku Tree Sprout began to grow in place of the long-dead Great Deku Tree. Link met with the Deku Tree Sprout, where he learned the true reason why he had aged: Link was the son of the Hylian mother who sought refuge from the wars in the Lost Woods. The Great Deku Tree could sense that Link's fate would have a great bearing on the history of Hyrule, and so took Link to be raised as a Kokiri.
Link now travelled to Death Mountain to search for the next Temple. The cloud ring around Death Mountain Link had noted in his youth was now a ring of fire. Link ventured to Goron City, finding it deserted save a young Goron, Darunia's son who was named after Link! Link the Goron explained to Link the Hylian that the Gorons rejected Ganondorf's new order, and now Ganondorf plans to destroy the Goron race by bringing to life the mythical fire dragon Volvagia, who once tried to burn all of Hyrule.
Link the Hylian entered the lava-filled crater of Death Mountain, finding his way into the Fire Temple and meeting with Darunia. Darunia urged Link to free the Gorons from their imprisonment, while Darunia attempted to defeat Volvagia. Link freed the Gorons and recovered the same Megaton Hammer which the Goron hero used to destroy Volvagia from long ago, and using this weapon Link destroyed the dragon. The Fire Temple was freed, Darunia awakening as the Sage of Fire.
Link now journeyed to Zora's Domain, only to find its caverns frozen over. The only surviver of this ice was Princess Ruto, whom Sheik saved. Link met with Ruto when he entered the Water Temple at Lake Hylia, though Link went a seperate way rather than put up with the arrogant Princess as she babbles on how Link, her fiancée by Zora law, left her for seven years.
Link destroyed the creature which maintained the ice at Zora's Domain, freeing the Zoras and allowing Ruto to be awakened as the Water Sage. Link now returned to Kakariko Village to look for clues to the location of the next Temple. There, Link found the village almost in tatters; Sheik explained that a phantom shadow beast, who had been sealed in Kakariko's well, had grown strong enough to escape from its prison. Impa, who originally sealed the monster, has gone to the Shadow Temple to re-seal the beast.
At Sheik's urging, Link proceeded immediately to the Shadow Temple. Link destroyed the beast to allow Impa to awaken as the Sage of Shadow, her awakened state allowing her to become youthful again. Link now travelled to the far west to the land of the Gerudos to find the final Temple, the Spirit Temple.
The Gerudos were not polite hosts when Link first arrived at their Fortress, but after proving his warrior skills they accepted him as an ally of their band. Link was now free to cross the Haunted desert Wasteland to the Spirit Temple, but when he reached his destination Link found no passage big enough to allow him to pass.
Sheik appeared, revealing to Link an important piece of information: by replacing the Master Sword at the Temple of Time, Link could go back in time seven years. Link returned to the Temple of Time, then proceeded back to the Spirit Temple. Here, he met the Gerudo's former Royal Regent, Nabooru. Nabooru had sneaked into the Spirit Temple, planning to destroy the base of Ganondorf's evil plans. Nabooru needed Link, his youthful body small enough to fit through the passages, to recover an artefact allowing Nabooru to enter the depths of the Temple.
Link proceeded through the passages, recovering the treasure as Nabooru instructed. But then, the witches who raised Ganondorf, Koume and Kotake Twinrova, discovered Nabooru and captured her. There was no way Link could save her, unless he recovered the Master Sword and returned to Ganondorf's time. Link did so, entering the depths of the Spirit Temple and destroying the Twinrova sisters.
Nabooru awakened as the Sage of Spirit, and now only one Sage remained. Rauru guided Link to the Temple of Time, where he met with Sheik. Sheik explained the legend of the Triforce splitting into three parts due to the touch of someone without perfect balance of its three forces. Ganondorf holds only the Triforce of Power, while Link carries the Triforce of Courage. Sheik reveals that Princess Zelda, the seventh Sage, holds the Triforce of Wisdom. Sheik then shed his mask, revealing that 'he' was in fact the Princess!
Zelda explained that when she last saw Link, she was escaping from Hyrule Castle: Ganondorf made an attempt on the life of the King of Hyrule, and Zelda later learned that attempt was successful. But Ganondorf still needed the Ocarina of Time that Zelda had, so Impa took the Princess into hiding. When Zelda saw Link, she felt it best to entrust the ocarina to Link; but Zelda couldn't have foreseen the Master Sword sealing Link in the Sacred Realm.
Impa tutored Zelda in the ways of the Sheikah in order to hide her from Ganondorf. Zelda, knowing what had happened through the Triforce of Wisdom's power, waited seven long years for Link to return. Now, Link must distract Ganondorf while Zelda opens the gate from Hyrule to the Evil Realm, and the other six sages seal Ganondorf.
But what Zelda failed to realise was that Ganondorf was waiting as Zelda revealed herself to Link. Ganondorf captured Zelda, taking her prisoner to his castle. Link followed them there, breaking into the castle and reaching the summit of Ganon's Tower. After a long battle, Ganondorf fell dead and Zelda was freed. The two then escaped from Ganondorf's crumbling castle.
However, Ganondorf had survived the attacks due to the Triforce of Power. Link fought long and hard to bring Ganondorf down long enough for the Sages to seal Ganondorf into the Evil Realm. The Evil King, however, still held the Triforce of Power and made a vow to wreak a thousand-fold vengeance upon the decendants of Link, Zelda and the Sages.
There was little else to do: Zelda and the six Sages could only remain in the Sacred Realm, while Link was returned to Hyrule. He was then returned to his original time, to the moments before he first met with Princess Zelda at Hyrule Castle, but he goes back to the castle to see zelda, and they both remember each other. And thats where ends
OCARINA OF TIME, STORY 2
"Your highness, your advisor wishes to see you." The King's messenger, Edbert, bowed as he spoke.
"Send Sir Dragmire in." The King yawned. Edbert opened the door, and in stepped a black robed figure, who pulled back his velvet hood, revealing a head full of bushy orange hair. He bowed with a sweeping motion, then stepped forward.
"Sir Dragmire, what is so important that you must see me at this hour?" The King inquired.
"I must...well....ask you of something." Ganondorf twiddled his fingers.
"Well, what is it?" The King was anxious to end the meeting and go to bed.
"I must ask you to loan me the Ocarina of Time. I have use of it."
"What? Most certainly not! It hasn't been entrusted to anyone outside the royal family for generations!" The King was shocked at his aubsurd request.
"Your highness, I must demand it immediately." Ganondorf's voice had an edge to it.
"Sir Dragmire, I must warn you that if you ask again, I will have you sent back to the desert."
"Give it to me..." Ganondorf's eyes glowed dangerously with anger.
"GUARDS!" King Harkinian cried, but Ganondorf reacted and hit the guards that came running with powerful magic that killed them. Several Gerudo soliders stepped into the chamber then.
"Ladies, search every room, evert cranny in this castle for the ocarina, and kill anyone who stands in the way. I don't care if you must destroy the whole castle, JUST FIND IT!!!!" Ganondorf adressed them, and the scantily clad warriors slunk away. He then turned to the King.
"Turn over the Ocarina or surrender the throne." Ganondorf formed a ball of magic in his hand. It glowed and pulsated above it. "Maybe this will help influence your decision?"
"I would rather die before doing either!" The King cried, fear shaking his normally calm voice.
"So be it then." Ganondorf prepared to hurl the ball of crackling energy at King Harkinian, but Impa leapt out from behind a tapestry, and shot a magic from her palm, deflecting the energy and sending it back to it's sender. Ganondorf groaned as the electricity crackled through him, and he slumped to the ground, unconcious. Impa turned to the King.
"Your highness, you must flee. Anywhere far away, even to Moldera if the need calls! I'll take care of Zelda. Go!" The King nodded and ran. Impa sprinted up several flights of stairs, avoiding Gerudo warriors along the way. She then dashed down a corridor into the Princess's chambers, where Zelda lay asleep. Impa ran to her side just as the Princess awoke, a smile on her face.
"Impa! Link's done it! He's gotten the stones! I sense it!"
"Zelda, that's good, but now's not the time. Get the Ocarina." Impa's tone of voice told Zelda not to question. Zelda ran into the adjoining room, where a jeweled box glittered in the candlelight. Zelda took it from the shelf, and pulled the glowing instrument from the folds of satin. She raced back to her bed chamber, where Impa was finishing packing clothes for them.
"Why are we leaving, Impa?"
"The castle is under attack by the Gerudo. Your father has gone to safety several minutes ago. There, done packing. Come on!"
Impa took Zelda's hand, pulling her toward the door.
"But I'm in my nightdress, Impa!" Zelda cried.
"What's more important, your vanity or your life?" Impa slung Zelda over her shoulder, and carried her down the hall. Cries of pain floated from nearby rooms, and Zelda began to tremble with fear. Impa raced down flights of stairs to the stables. Here Zelda's private steed, Aimee, pawed the ground, snorting. Zelda pulled herself onto Aimee's back, Impa mounting behind her. Impa smacked the horse on the flank, and Aimee took off, out the stable exit, down the great hall, and across the drawbridge. The guards ran to get out of the way, seeing that the situation was serious.
"Impa! Let me stop at the Temple!" Zelda pleaded.
"Quickly." Impa pulled into the trees in front of the Temple of Time. Zelda hopped off, and ran inside. She prayed to Din for her safety, then, clutching the Ocarina to her chest, left a telepathic message in it for Link. Impa then came in.
"Zelda, come...NOW!" They ran from the Temple, and galloped through the market. The drawbridge was up, seeing it was night. Impa called;
"Down the bridge! The Princess's life is in grave danger!" The bridge creaked down, and Zelda looked back at her town for maybe the last time, to see Ganondorf racing close behind, grinning evilly. Aimee shot across the bridge, and Zelda saw the little forest boy, Link run to get out of the way. She saw he would only get the ocarina if she threw it to him. She raised her arm high, and threw it with all of her strength. It sailed through the air, slipped past Link's outstretched hands, and *PLUNK!* it landed in the moat. She wished she had more athletic ability, but, then she saw Ganondorf stop and question Link. She and Impa then disapeared into the forest.
"Impa, where will we go!?! We can't go back!" Tears ran down the 10 year old's face.
"There is an island off the East coast of this land. They say my people have died out, I'm the last one, but Sheikah are abundant there. You will be raised as my daughter in the ways of the Sheikah." Zelda was satisfied with this answer, and the swaying of the horse lulled her to sleep.
Zelda awoke to voices. Impa's voice was one, the other belonged to an old woman. They were talking of money;"I'll give you 10 rupees for some cucco legs."
"Fried or roasted?"
"It does not matter." Zelda opened her eyes to see an old woman packing food into a basket. Impa paid her, and brought Zelda a steaming brew.
"Drink." Impa instructed. Zelda took a gulp, and suddenly felt very weary. She yawned and drifted off again.
She awoke again to the sharp smell of salt and the sound of lapping waves. The sun shone bright. She sat up, to see Impa looking across the water. They were on a boat? Huh? She must have been sleeping.
"Where are we, Impa?" She saw a sliver of land in the distance.
"On the sea, heading for Darnoll. That is the island I spoke of. The population is completely Sheikah. If you are going to be my Sheikah daughter, you must have a Sheikah name....hrmmmmm......Rallin? No......Sheik? Yes, Sheik is your name now, OK?"
"Sure." Zelda's stomach growled. Impa reached into her basket, and pulled out a fried cucco leg, and handed it to the Princess. She then fished out one for herself, and they sat in silence for a few moments, devouring hungrily their meal.
"Impa, what time is it?" Zelda broke the silence.
"About 14:00. Here, put this on." Impa reached into their pack, and pulled out a blue woolen dress. Zelda pulled it on, and asked;
"Impa, when did you make this?"
"When Sir Dragmire came to the castle. I sensed he was up to no good, and we would have to someday escape, and hide in disguise. You needed peseant clothing."
"Oh. I like the dress."
"Thank you. We'll be there in a half hour...Sheik." Impa grinned, and Zelda giggled;
"Okay....Mother."
Several hours later, the tired duo tramped into a small town called Turan Village. Impa led Zelda to the inn there, where she stopped to talk with a man whose skin was a tan color, like Impa's own, not like the Hylian's pale complexions. His hair was a startling teal color. Impa signed a book, plunked a red rupee in the man's hand, then turned to Zelda;
"Come Ze-er I mean Sheik." The man stared at Zelda, obviously fascinated by her pale looks. Impa quickly pulled her off to a room.
"Whew! I almost thought he suspected I wasn't Sheikah!" Zelda exclaimed.
"Yes, I know." Impa handed Zelda her nightdress, gave her a peck on the forehead, and went into the adjoining room."G'night"
"G'night..Mother." Zelda heard Impa give a chuckle. Zelda slipped out of her wool dress, and put on her nightdress. She pulled back the sheet on her bed, and lay down to sleep.
The next thing Zelda knew, Impa was gently shaking her awake.
"Sheik, time to wake up. We've got many miles to go." Zelda noticed Impa was not wearing her armor. Instead, she was wearing just a long dress, like Zelda's. Zelda rose, and pulled on her dress, while Impa got a hog bristle brush to do Zelda's hair with. Impa brushed out Zelda's golden curls, then spoke;
"You know, Sheikah keep their hair short. If you want complete assurance your cover won't be blown, I could cut your hair..." Zelda's hand flew up to her hair;
"How short?"
"Shoulder length, maybe longer.."
"Alright." Zelda sighed. Impa got a long sword from her pack. She unsheathed it, and held it to Zelda's hair. Measuring the length, Impa held out her hair. She then cut it with one clean swipe. Zelda's eyes were clenched shut. "All done, Sheik. It suits you." Impa held a mirror to Zelda's face. Zelda looked. Her hair was shoulder length, like Impa promised.
"I like it Mother." Zelda was smiling.
"Good. I'm going to rent a wagon. I'll be back soon." Impa left, and, like she said, was back within a quarter hour. She and Zelda signed out of the hotel, then headed east, towards Mirana, where Sheikah were trained in combat and cunning.
"How old are you really, Impa?" Zelda looked to her surrogate mother."Eighty winters. We live long, we Sheikah. That is actually considered young to us."
"Is training hard?" Zelda asked.
"A bit. But you will need the skills.... I will tell you a tale, if you like."
"Alright then! '' Zelda exclaimed.
"OK. This is in the Book of Mudora... *AHEM!*...
"That's interesting....so it means Link is sleeping in another world?"
"Indeed....I think Aimee needs a rest." Impa stopped the wagon by a quiet brook, where the horse gulped greedily.
"Mother, I want to meet him, and aid him. I think I love Link."
"Really? Well, maybe if your training is complete in seven years...." Impa said, surprised. After several minutes, they were off again.
They arrived in Mirana late that afternoon. Zelda saw Sheikah children of 10 - 16 summers training in combat. She saw one step back from the group, wave his hand in the air, and throw a nut of some sort to the earth, and *POOF* he was gone.
"Will I learn to do that, Mother?" Zelda's eyes were wide.
"They all do." Impa said, " Come, we will stay at my sister's home." She put Aimee in a stable near a large house, where other stallions were, removing the saddle and bridle. Zelda found a corncob in a bucket, and began to brush down the snow white mare, who nickered happily. After awhile, Impa spoke up;
"It's getting dark, Sheik. Let's go." They walked out of the stable, and to the large cottage.
"Your sister- I mean my aunt lives here?" Zelda asked, "It's large for a peasant cottage..." She added in a whisper.
"My sister Nadia is rather fortunate. By the way, I was born in this house."
"You weren't born in Kakariko?" Zelda asked.
"No. I tell people that because this island is a Sheikah secret. Let's go in." Impa knocked at the rough hewn door. A woman with hair of startling hair red as berries, blood red, answered the door. She held a young child with silvery hair, like Impa's, on her hip.
"Impa?!?" The woman smiled.
"Nadia!" The sisters hugged."and who is this?"
"Jacques. He's two summers old," Nadia saw Zelda, and a surprised look came over her face." You've brought a Hylian!"
"Oh, yes...Sheik... This is my daughter! She's half-Hylian, half Sheikah. I married eleven winters ago, but my husband, a Hylian, is dead." Zelda wondered how Impa could lie so easily. She stepped forward.
"Oh, that's different then. Hello Sheik. How old are ye?" Nadia questioned.
" Ten summers, Aunt Nadia."
"Oh, come in!" Nadia motioned to them, "Sit down!!!! Dinner's almost ready." She stooped over a large iron kettle over a fire in the center of the large main room. A delicious smell wafted from the pot.
"What's for dinner, Nadia?" Impa asked.
" Bara seed stew." Nadia answered. Zelda looked to Impa;
"What are Bara seeds?"
"Large nuts that come off the Bara trees in the north. The fruits inside are very good." Impa answered.
"It's ready now." Nadia said. Impa and Zelda sat at a long wooden table, covered by an intricatley woven tapestry, made of beads. Nadia then called;
"Jinolle!" A girl of about twelve winters race into the room, her shoulder-length purple hair flying out behind her. "Sal!" A pink haired boy of maybe nine summers came in. "Ana, bring Bette when you come!" A six winter-old girl with blue hair came in, carrying a baby with hair of a lighter blue. Nadia then spoke;
"Children, this is your cousin, Sheik. Remember Auntie Impa?" The children ran up, and hugged their aunt, and said hello to Zelda.
"Nadia, when I left, you were still with child with Jinolle! Hello, children!" Impa said.
" Sit down, everybody!" Nadia ladled steaming bowls of the soup, and put them before the people. Zelda took a sip. It was delicious. She devoured it all quickly.
"Do you like it, Sheik?" Nadia asked. Zelda nodded. After awhile, everyone was done and Nadia said;
"Goodnight, children, Jinolle, please take Bette and Jaques to their nursery....Impa and Sheik, your rooms are upstairs. Sheik, by the way, are you going to training for the ways of our people?"
(Note- These were deftness in combat, cunning, magic, and weaving.)
"Yes," Impa said, "I planned to start her training tomorrow."
"Well, goodnight, you two." Nadia kissed Zelda's forehead, and Zelda and Impa went up the creaky stairs. Impa gave Zelda her nightgown, and murmured;
"Goodnight, Sheik."
"Goodnight, Mother
"Impa! Impa!" Zelda screamed. Impa came running from her room.
"Zel- I mean Sheik! What is it?" She ran to comfort the crying child, "Shhhh. Zelda, what happened?" She whispered, her arms wrapped around Zelda.
"I-I had a d-dream.....Ganondorf h-he invaded Hyrule. He touched the Triforce like you said...and now, monsters are k-k-killing everybody. I saw visions of Hyrule Castle Town i-i-in flames, and people were dying. I've gotta do something, Impa!"
"You couldn't do anything if you tried, Princess. His evil power is to great for whole armies, much less one small girl like you, to defeat. The only one who could kill him would be......The Hero of Time...." Impa's voice trailed off.
"Who?" Zelda asked.
"Oh...nobody...you'll learn in good time. Maybe in your visions?" Impa replied.
"Maybe..........zzzzzz" Zelda had fallen asleep. Impa tucked her in, and went back to bed.
***
"Mother, I saw more visions last night." Zelda sat brushing her hair.
"Really, Sheik? Of what?"
"Of the Hero. It is Link, isn't it? I saw visions of him killing Ganondorf. I also saw a vision of....hee hee hee....never mind..." Zelda was giggling.
"Sheik....what was it? This could be telling your whole future here.." Impa waved a finger at Zelda.
"He was kissing me."
***
"Children, the first thing about battle is always know what your opponent is doing." An old man, with greying indigo hair was instructing many children in combat training. He didn't notice, though, the chatter in the back.
"Straw-haired pale skinner..." A child taunted Zelda. Zelda tried to slap him, but he rolled out of the way.
"Sheik! Remus! Come sit up front here!" Zelda and the boy shuffled up to the front of the group. The old man continued to preach on the importance of knowing your opponent. He also began to show simple battle techniques, when the noon bell rang.
"Go home kids." The man called. Zelda ran back to Nadia's home,where the rest of her 'family' sat, eating.
"Sheik, I need you to come with me after lunch." Impa said.
"Alright." Zelda said, knowing it was not for the ears of Nadia or the others. After the meal was done, Zelda and Impa went for a walk, through the rugged countryside, where Impa stopped by a boulder. She sat and motioned for Zelda to do the same. Zelda hauled herself onto the rock.
"Zelda, I want to tell you something..."
"Impa, we've already had THAT talk!" Zelda laughed.
"Not that one, silly, I want you to know about the Hero of Time.... He is a Legendary figure, the only one who can pull the Master Sword from the Pedestal of Time.....He is the only one who can destroy Ganondorf......It is said a mysterious Sheikah will aid him..'
"Me?" Zelda was surprised.
"Aye, Princess. I have decided to train you myself. The old one you were with this morning teaches too quickly."
"Cool." Zelda said.
"Alright, there is something else you should know.....The Hero will be aided by a mysterious Sheikah, yes, but also by seven sages."
"Who are they, Impa?" Zelda was curious.
" A forest child, who has grown up with Link." Impa said, and went on...
" King of the Rock people, The selfish Zora Princess, A Gerudo leader who hates Ganondorf........Me......."
"You are a Sage, Impa?" Zelda's eyes were wide.
" Yes, Nayru appeared to me and told me. There is one more Sage...."
" Who, Impa?" Zelda wanted to know. Impa's reply made her gasp.
"You...are a Sage, Princess."
"Am I really a Sage?" Zelda had asked Impa this for every day for seven moons.
"Yes, Zelda." Impa was used to this by now, "You need to know another Sheikah legend, of the Triforce, if you wish to aid Link in his quest," Her accent grew thick, and her voice had a light air to it;
It is made of three pieces, Power, Wisdom, and Courage
If the one who makes a wish has those forces in balance
He will have the true power to govern all.
If the one who makes a wish does not have all three forces in balance
The Triforce will separate into three pieces, leaving that one only with the force one most believes in.
If that one wishes to govern all, he must retrieve the two lost parts..."
"Ganondorf only has one part?" Zelda asked, "which one?"
"Power." Impa answered, biting into a scone.
"Who are the other two?"
"Link has the Triforce of Courage." Impa answered
"Impa...who has the other part?"
" *SIGH*.....You, Zelda have the Triforce of Wisdom."
"How can you tell?" Zelda asked, taking a bite of roast keese.
"You have the Triforce mark on the back of your hand. Nayru has told me the other two." Impa answered.
"Is it obvious?" Zelda frowned, hiding her hand beneath her skirts.
"Not really. It is a faint marking, but it harnesses great powers. Hold out your hand at that boulder, and concentrate." Impa pointed to a nearby rock. Zelda held out her hand, and her forehead wrinkled. She bit her lip, concentrating on the boulder. It exploded with a bang, and Zelda and Impa were showered with pebbles.
"Wow....." Zelda was in awe.
"I have something nice to teach you, Zelda. Look in my pack.." Impa grinned. Zelda dug through the cloth sack, drawing out a harp like instrument.
"Impa, your lute!!! You brought it and didn't tell me for seven moons?" Zelda was smiling. She loved to be serenaded by the songs Impa played on this instrument. Impa plucked out a few chords of Zelda's favorite song, a lullaby from her infant hood.
"Impa, will you teach me a song? Please?" Zelda asked with wide, solemn eyes.
"I intended to teach you several." Impa said, "Hold the lute like this, and here are the notes." Impa plucked out a few notes ranging from low, to very high, to middle, a bit lower, then middle again.
"I like that. Let me try please." Zelda reached out and took the lute. Cradling it in an arm, she plucked the strings until she got the tune right.
"You have a gift, Zelda. That is the Minuet of Forest." Impa was pleased, "Here's another." Impa took the lute, and played a series of notes that ran quick and exciting like Zora's River. Zelda then took the lute, and stumbled over the strings with unpracticed fingering. Finally, the tune became recognizable. Zelda then played it until she could fly over the strings as well as Impa. Impa then took the lyre.
"Good! That was the Bolero of Fire! This tune is cool, and fluid, like a lake." She plucked out a smooth song, almost sad to hear.
"That's pretty, Impa." Zelda took the lute, and once again tripped over the notes, until the song was played correctly. Impa once again took the lute.
" That was the Serenade of Water. I do believe you are musically inclined, Zel." Impa wore a broad smile. She then added," This song draws you into the infinate darkness that absorbs even time. The Nocturne of Shadow." Impa's lute sang sorrowfully, going from very high, to low in pitch.
"That one is depressing, but I like how it ends." Zelda took the harp, cradling it, and played each note perfectly on the first try. Impa was proud of her student, as Zelda was proud of herself. Impa then spoke;
"The last one is a song that will lead a child to the desert. The Requiem of Spirit."
"What do you mean, Impa?" Zelda's forehead wrinkled.
"In good time, Princess." Impa plucked out a rich low song that reminded Zelda of the setting sun. Zelda cradled the lyre, and her eyes closed as she was drawn into the music. She played the piece well.
"Zelda! That was beautiful! Each song has a power to transport the one with the Ocarina of Time." Impa said.
"Where?"
"The Minuet of Forest transports you to the Sacred Forest Meadow. The Bolero of Fire takes you to the Death Mountain Crater. The Serenade of Water warps you to Lake Hylia. The Nocturne of Shadow takes you to the very Graveyard where your dear mother was buried. And the Requiem of Spirit brings you to the Desert Colossus, the very edge of Hyrule. You must teach these melodies to Link so he may defeat Ganondorf."
"I will, Impa. I will."
"Sheik! We need to get going!" Impa called. Zelda flipped off the overhang of dirt near Nadia's cottage, sticking the landing without a falter. The clumsy ten summer old child was now a graceful young lady of sixteen summers. She landed right in front of Impa and Nadia.
"Graceful, Sheik." Nadia said, turning to Impa, "Sister, you never told me where you are going, or why."
"Sister, we are going to Hyrule."
"Hyrule!" Nadia was shocked. "Why?" Impa sighed deeply.
"Sister, when we came here, six winters ago, I lied to you..... Sheik is not my daughter. She isn't Sheikah either."
" You lied? She's not your daughter?" Nadia was hurt and shocked and angry at the same time.
"No. Sheik isn't really her name, even." Impa was weeping by this time.
"Whose daughter is she? What is her name?" Nadia was crying too. This was hurtful that her Sister would even fib to her.
"Can I tell her, Mother, I mean Impa?" Zelda stepped forward. Impa nodded, and Zelda curtsied, saying nobly;
"Nadia, I am Zelda, the Princess of Hyrule. Impa is my handmaiden. We fled because my life was endangered by a man who has terrifying power. I sent a lad my age to stop him, but it backfired. The man touched the Triforce, and the youth is sleeping in the Sacred Realm for another winter, when he will emerge to defeat this plauge." Nadia was so shocked, she could not speak.
"M-lady...Oh....Your Highness!" Nadia curtsied.
"No need Nadia. Thank you for sheltering us." Zelda said.
"Y-your'e welcome!" Nadia exclaimed.
"Do not tell a soul..." Impa cautioned.
"O-of course not, Sister.." Nadia bowed to them. Then, Jinolle ran up.
"Goodbye, Sheik." She gave Zelda a hug.
"Farewell Jinolle. Until our paths meet again, cousin." Zelda turned and mounted Aimee. Impa gave a final goodbye, and mounted a horse called Giara. She and Zelda rode off, without looking back.
***
Zelda smelled the sharp smell of salt, as she and Impa led the horses onto a boat about 12 feet long. Storm clouds brewed in the northwestern skies, but Impa and Zelda paid no mind, wishing to return to Hyrule before nightfall. Impa and Zelda each took an oar, and began to row towards a faint sliver of land; Hyrule.
***
A cool wind ruffled Zelda's short hair, and she shuddered. Impa handed her a blanket, saying;
"Let's try to beat the storm." Zelda looked, seeing faintly the small port of Darunia. Waves rocked the boat, and the horses whinnied nervously. A cold rain pattered on the water, dropping the temperature sharply. Zelda and Impa pulled their blankets over their heads, rowing wildly for shore. Soon, though, they were soaked to the skin. The waves rocked the boat more wildly now. At one point, a huge swell nearly flipped the boat. They were almost home now. Suddenly, a large wave formed, heading for the boat. Impa saw it first, and called;
"Brace yourself, Princess!" The wave hit, dragging the boat beneath the foaming sea. Zelda suddenly was in deep, unable to see or breathe. Go up! She told herself. Up! Zelda kicked furiously for the surface. Her lungs were on the verge of bursting now.... Suddenly, a pair of strong hands pulled her to the surface. Impa. Zelda coughed, and sputtered.
"You saved me, Impa!.....Where are the horses?"
"I cannot find them, Zelda." Impa dove below the surface, coming up seconds later.
"Swim to the shore. I'll be there soon." Impa said.
"No! Leave you alone on the sea?" Zelda then looked to see the coast mere meters away. "Alright." Zelda pulled herself onto the shore, waiting for Impa's return. Impa swam up a few minutes later, saying with remorse;
"They're gone, Zelda. Aimee and Giara both. I'm sorry. All I found was the lute." Impa held it up. "I'm so sorry."
Zelda buried her head in her arms and wept, her tears mixing with the drying ocean water on her skin.
"Are you OK, Sheik?" Impa asked Zelda, who hadn't spoke much since the loss of her beloved horses to the angry sea. Zelda merely nodded, and pulled out the lute, the only thing that survived the horrible night before, save for some rupees. She plucked the strings, sounding out the Requiem of Spirit. She thought it was the most proper tribute she could give Aimee and Giara. She felt as if a dark cloud had settled, though the sun shone bright. Impa gave the innkeeper a red rupee, and she and Zelda stepped out into the streets of Darunia. They crossed the square, standing out greatly with Impa in her armor, and Zelda in a blue jumpsuit with a sleeveless top over it, in leiu of long dresses. Zelda paid no mind to the busy bustling about her, as she and Impa stepped onto the lonely field.
"Sheik, you must get on with your life. Aimee and Giara were old. I miss them too, but you have to let go." Impa said, a tear in the corner of her amber eye. Zelda began to weep.
"I know, but I can't help thinking of how they would search your pockets for a treat, and how Aimee actually saved my life, by getting us away from the castle!" She snuffled, and they continued to walk in silence.
***
"Kakariko." Impa said, with a flourish as they entered through the gates the sun sank below Death Mountain. Zelda gasped. She had never seen Kakariko as a child, and she exclaimed;
"It's bigger than Hyrule Castle Town!"
"That's because it's grown since Hyrule Castle Town's destruction." Impa replied, adding; "I founded Kakariko.." Zelda was about to reply, but suddenly, she gasped, and her vision faded rapidly in a haze. Her vision cleared seconds later, but she wasn't in Kakariko Village anymore. She saw Zora's Domain, but no Zora children splashed in it's waters. No daring teenagers dove off the waterfall. At first, Zelda could not see why, but then it hit her. Zora's Domain was frozen solid!!!!! Even the waterfall was frozen. A thin, shivering cry for help pierced the frigid air. It wailed piteously, and the Zora's teeth were obviously chattering. But where were the other Zoras? Aaaah! Zelda realized quickly. Under the ice. But what could she do?
A sharp, acrid stench filled Zelda's nostrils, bringing tears to her eyes. She sat up, choking for breath, to see Impa's worried face gazing at her. Smelling salts were in her hand.
"Sheik, are you OK?" Impa asked as other villagers crowded around Zelda's pallet. She was in a house, but whose?
"Where am I?" Zelda asked.
"Sheik, this was my house before I left for the Castle." Impa said as the other villagers asked questions.
"Who is she....Will she be OK?" They asked.
"She is my daughter, Sheik." Impa said, " and she needs her rest, so goodnight." The villagers left.
"Zelda, what was the vision about?" Impa said in a hoarse whisper when the villagers left.
"Impa, Zora's Domain is frozen!!!! And someone is crying for help. I've gotta go free them!" Zelda cried. Impa replied;
"Go, then, tomorrow morning."
***
Zelda rose with the cucco's crow the next day. Saying goodbye to Impa, and packing some keese wings for a midday meal, she set out about 7:00, and headed east towards the Zora civilization. It wasn't hard, she just followed the river. But halfway up the river, the sky darkened, and snowflakes to fall. Zelda leapt across narrow parts of the river, avoiding the Oktorok's pebbles they spit, until she reached the waterfall that covered the Domain. Measuring the distance carefully, Zelda leapt across the gap, through the waterfall, and into the Domain, which was just how she envisioned it. Everything was frozen solid, and Zelda gingerly stepped onto the thick ice. Beneath her, she saw a Zora, deep in the ice, obviously frozen while trying to swim fast for the surface. She then heard cries for help again. Following them, she was led to a deep part near the waterfall, where a Zora head protruded above the ice.. the Zora Princess, Ruto! Zelda quickly rushed over.
"I'll get you out, Princess." She said.
"H-help-p m-me p-please." Ruto chattered her teeth. Zelda looked for a crack in the ice from which she could pry Ruto out, but there was none. There was only one solution, and Zelda had not wanted to have to use it. Pulling off her glove, she looked on the back of her hand. The Triforce mark shone faintly. She put it to the ice, concentrating on shattering the ice. The ice around Ruto glowed red, and melted away just enough to free the Zora Princess. Zelda pulled Ruto out, and wrapped a woollen cloak around her.
"Thank you.. uhhh ...who are you, anyway?" Ruto was shivering less violently now. Zelda panicked. Should she give Ruto her real identity?
"Do you want the truth or a lie?" Zelda said, grinning.
"The truth, of course." Ruto said. Zelda sighed, and pulled off her hood.
"Don't tell anyone." Ruto shook her head. Zelda sighed again. "I'm Princess Zelda." Ruto gasped.
"Zelda?" She studied her face. "It is you! I can tell from the time our fathers were having some treaty made....." She grew sombre. "Everyone said you'd been killed...I'm glad you're alive. Thank you for saving me."
"You're welcome. What caused this?" Zelda asked.
" A week ago, a strange monster surrounded in goo came from Zora's Fountain. It surrounded my father, and he was imprisoned in some type of crystal....I dove off the waterfall to warn everyone else, because I saw the goo freeze the water, but as I landed in the water, the water began to freeze. I swam to the surface as fast as I could, but I got stuck as soon as my head popped out....I think the others are alive...just hibernated, but I don't know about my da. Come see." Ruto led Zelda up some stone steps, and Zelda saw King Zora- just as Ruto described. Zelda ran up on the throne to inspect the crystal.
"Red ice.....Heat won't melt it.....Only Blue Fire can, but you can only get it in that cavern in the fountain....."
"Who can get it?" Ruto asked. "Wait, my fiancee Link could!"
"He's your fiancee?" Zelda asked, a bit bitter about this.
"Yup....He could also go kill the monster so this place would unfreeze!" Ruto said. "Does he still live in the forest? The monster's in the Water Temple now.''
"No, he opened the Door of Time, and is sleeping in the Sacred Realm for another two moons."
"No wonder he never came back!!!!!" Ruto said.
"I'll tell him to go the Temple. You go on ahead." Zelda said. Ruto went to the waterfall with Zelda, and after a goodbye, she swam down the river like a shot. Zelda then headed back to Kakariko.

That night, Zelda had a dream that Link gave her back the Ocarina, and she sent him back to his childhood. Afterwards, she vowed never to do that to Link.
"Sheik, come into the house for a second." Impa said. Zelda stopped playing with a pocket cucco and went back into her house. Impa shut and bolted the door. She then whispered into Zelda's ear;
"Happy seventeenth Birthday, Princess. I have a surprise for you. Stay here." Impa went into her small bedroom upstairs. Zelda could not possibly think of what it was, and then Impa came back with a package wrapped in brown paper.
"I had this imported from Calatia." She beamed. Zelda carefully pulled the string, and the paper fell away. Zelda gasped at what she saw.
"Thank you thank you thank you!!!" She cried, and gave Impa a big bear hug. For laying on the wooden table was a white long dress of fine linen with no sleeves, a purple sleeveless top to go over it, a blue banner bearing the Hylian crest on it, attached to a belt of gold, and gold arm coverings, and to top it off, a shining gilded tiara, bearing a ruby from it.
"It's beautiful, Impa. THANK YOU!!!!" Zelda gave Impa another hug.
"Got it for you to wear when you return to the castle...I know you will, because though I never told you, I have occasional visions too." Impa smiled.
"You do?.....May I try the dress on?" Zelda asked.
"Of course." Impa said. Zelda went into her bedroom, and slipped on the dress. She then pulled on the top, fastened the belt, and pulled on the arm coverings. Finally, she let her hair out of a bun, and brushed it so it hung loose about her shoulders. She then set the tiara on her head, and went back into the main room, where Impa was waiting. Zelda dipped into a graceful, noble curtsy, and Impa's cow in her cage *MOOOOOED* in reply. Impa exclaimed;
"Oh, Zelda, it's beautiful!!!!! You're beautiful! Oh...." Zelda felt good at these remarks.
"Thank you, Mother...."
"Okay, go put on your jumpsuit now. It's unnatural to bolt your door in daytime, and the others might wonder if there's anything amiss." Impa cautioned. "By the way, put that dress behind a sheet in your room. Also......Link should emerge tomorrow from the Sacred Realm." She said. Zelda's heart leapt into her throat, and she trembled with excitement all day.

Zelda approached the abandoned Hyrule Castle Town the next afternoon at about 17:00. She stepped cautiously as if she were in a graveyard, until she approached the main marketplace. There, the bodies of the ones slain seven years ago had transformed into life sucking monsters!!!! Zelda quickly backed out before she would see any one she recognised, such as a guard. Out on the field again, she felt along the town's wall until she felt a loose brick. She pushed it in hard, and a panel of stone spun out, leading to a tunnel...a royal family secret. Zelda walked through the dark passageway, emerging minutes later being the Temple of Time. She went around to the front, and entered the dark Temple. The only light streamed from the windows near the ceiling, making blocks of rosy light on the floor. She then looked to the altar. The Spiritual Stones glistened in their hollows on it, undimmed by dust. Behind the altar, Zelda could see that the Master Sword was gone from the Pedestal of Time. That meant Link truly was the Legendary Hero of Time!!!! Zelda heard a mystical sound, so she ducked in the shadows near the Pedestal. She tried to supress a gasp as she saw Link descend to the Pedestal in a burst of blue light. His faerie too. She heard Navi say something about seven years passing and weapons in her high piping voice. Link then said to the faerie,
"Let's get out of here, Navi." That's when Zelda stepped from the shadows, saying;
"I've been waiting for you, Hero of Time." Link whirled around, his sword drawn.
"Wha-who are you?" He asked, a quiver in his voice. Zelda replied;
"I am Sheik. Survivor of the Sheikah. Daughter of Impa...." She studied him. "As I see you standing there, holding the mythical Master Sword, you really do look like the Hero of Time." She stepped forward. "When evil rules all, an awakening cry will go forth from the Temple of Light to the other Sages who dwell in the five Temples. One in a deep forest....One on a high mountain......One under a vast lake....One within the house of the dead.....One inside a spirit of the sand. Together, the Hero and the Sages shall bind the evil, and return the light of peace to the world."
"What?" Link was obviously puzzled. "Oh, OK, I get it now." He said after some thought. Zelda went on;
"The first sage is waiting for the time of awakening in the Forest Temple. The Sage is a girl I am sure you know. But, currently equipped as you are, you cannot even enter the Temple." Zelda said.
"Why not?" Link asked. Zelda could not help thinking of how gorgeous he looked, how that lock of hair dangling in his eyes gave him a boyish look.... Her mind was wandering. She went on;
"There are no steps." She said. "I do believe that Dampe had a treasure he carried to his grave.....If you want to save the forest girl, head toward Kakariko Village! Good luck hero...Also, there will be times you will need to return here quickly. I will teach you a magical song for when that time comes...The Prelude of Light." She pulled her lute from behind her back, and plucked the strings lovingly in a tune that sang of hope and life. Link followed along with the Ocarina of Time...her ocarina. It was a magical moment. Zelda then spoke;
"Link...Until we meet again." She stepped back, and raised her hand high. Waving it with a flourish, she threw a Deku nut on the stone floor, and disappeared to find herself back at the gates of Kakariko Village. Leaning against a stone wall, she prayed to Nayru;
Please let him like me. Please.

That night, Zelda had another vision of Link. He was riding a chestnut mare with a flowing white mare, obviously racing a man atop a chocolate stallion. Link won, and leapt over a wall of the ranch.
Zelda woke up laughing.
Zelda awoke the next morning to see Link walking through the square. He stopped to talk to someone, who pointed him towards the graveyard. He ran there, faerie in tow, and Zelda exclaimed;
"Good, he's going to get the Hookshot."
"Yes, but he'll have to race Dampe's ghost." Impa said. Zelda stayed by the window until she saw Link and Navi emerge from the windmill, which was somehow connected to the tomb of the ancient gravedigger. The hookshot, dangling from his belt, glistened in the morning sun. The small blue faerie went up to his ear, saying something, maybe to go to the forest? Zelda saw Link nod, and race from the village.
"I've got to beat him to the Forest, Impa." Zelda said.
"Go..G'bye" Impa replied. Zelda gave her surrogate mother a hug, and set off towards Goron City, where the shortcut to the Forest lay.
***
Zelda arrived at Goron City late that afternoon. Her trek up Death Mountain had not been pleasant. Large boulders tumbled down the trail, and volcanic ash spurted from the crater at certain times. As Zelda entered the dark, cool cavern the Gorons lived in, she found it empty, save for a small Goron rolling round and around and round and around. Zelda knew from study as a child that Gorons rolled to express joy or distress. In this case, distress. Zelda leapt down to the level the young Goron rolled on, and as he approached, he stopped, and looked at Zelda with big sad eyes.
"What's wrong, little one?" Zelda asked.
"T-the otherrrrrr G-gorons w-w-were tak-ken aw-way!" The Goron sobbed.
"Where?" Zelda asked.
"T-to the F-f-fire T-temple. G-ganondorf w-will feed themmm to V-volvagia!!!" Tears rolled down the child Goron's face; "A dragon!!"
"I know who can help. I'll guide him here." Zelda said, and Link's strong, handsome face popped into her head.
"Thank you lady ma'am person!" The little Goron smiled and resumed rolling. Zelda leapt down another level and searched the winding path until she heard the faint strains of a joyous melody. She ran towards the sound to find a tunnel with a faint light at the end. Zelda ran into it, and seconds later emerged to a wood filled with tunnels. She was here. The Lost Woods. She turned left, and found a little boy of about 10 blocking the next tunnel.
"Could you let me through please?" Zelda asked.
"Saria told me never to let anyone pass." The boy said.
"Let me through....I need to get to the Forest Temple." She said, a edge to her voice.
"And why?" The chubby boy asked.
"Look, let me through.. PLEASE!" Zelda was beyond annoyed.
"No." The boy put his hands on his hips, and put his little freckled nose in the air.
"Alright." Zelda crouched, and leapt over his head, rolling through the tunnel. She could hear the boy shouting, but he didn't give chase. Zelda darted through a few more passageways, and found herself in an enchanting place.
"The Sacred Forest Meadow...Almost there." Zelda said to her self. She crouched again, preparing to spring like a cat, and she leapt onto a stone wall, now able to walk above the maze, but narrowly missing a moblin's sharp spear. Zelda leapt from wall to wall finally reaching a set of stone steps. She crept up the steps to see a large Moblin at the top. Thankfully it was asleep. She tiptoed past it's snoozing form, and climbed a tree near the Temple. Snuggling in the branches, she waited.
***
The moon rose and shone a milky light across the meadow. A floating light caught the attention of Zelda's bleary eyes, and she watched Link and his faerie approach the Temple. He stopped at a stump, and hung his head. Zelda wondered why, and closed her eyes for a second. She saw a green haired girl sitting on that stump, playing an ocarina. She opened her eyes again, and leapt from the tree. Link whirled around, and said;
"Hello, Sheik." He bowed, grinning.
"We meet again, Link." She nodded in reply to his bow. Stepping forward, she said; "The flow of Time is always cruel. It's speed seems different for each person, but no one can change it. A thing that doesn't change with Time is a memory of younger days..." She pulled out her lute. "In order to return here again, play the Minuet of Forest." She plucked the strings lovingly, sounding out a sassy waltz. Link followed along again with the Ocarina, as the song ended. Until we meet again, Link." She said
"Goodbye, Sheik." Link walked towards her. Quickly, she pulled out a Deku Nut, and threw it to the earth. *POOF!* She
re-appeared at the entrance to the steps, behind Link. She heard him say;
"Where'd she go? She's very pretty..." Link sighed. He shrugged, and pulled out his Hookshot. He aimed it at a tree, and launched himself up to the Temple. He ran inside.
"Good luck, Link." Zelda whispered.
He thought she was pretty!!!!!!!!!
She went back to the Lost Woods, and walked back to the stone steps from which she came. She entered the tunnel,
re-surfacing in Goron City again. She jumped to ground level, and walked to the Chief's chamber. Pulling back the stone statue, she discovered an entrance to Death Mountain Crater. She walked in, to be met by a blast of heat, The air quivered with the intense temperature. Looking around, Zelda found a perfect perch to wait for Link on; a broken bridge. She flipped gracefully onto a overhanging peice of wood above it.
Link thought she was pretty!!!!
Zelda nearly swooned off her perch.
The heat of the crater rose in waves, making Zelda break out in a sweat. She sat on the perch, smiling to herself.
Link thinks I'm pretty...
She could not get over this. Oh, how she ached to tell him who she really was. She longed to kiss him....She couldn't think in this heat. Leaping onto the bridge, she then flipped onto the scorched ground near the entrance to Goron City. Panting, she stumbled into the city, falling against a cold stone wall. She savoured the coolness of the wall, releif to her hot, sweaty skin. Oh, she was tired. Judging from the sky she had seen above the crater, it was 00:00 or later. Zelda looked around the room, and found a rug in the doorway. Sighing, she sank into the depths of the plush carpet, and fell asleep.
*BOOM* Zelda awoke with a start. Startled, she looked around, and saw Link's green figure in the morning light streaming from the gates of Death Mountain Trail. He had stopped the little Goron, and was now trying to talk to him.
He did it! He awakened the forest Sage!!!! She thought.
Zelda shook herself. He musn't see her yet. She qickly dashed into the crater, and flipped back onto her perch. Looking to Goron City, she saw Link come into the boiling crater. He looked up at her with those gorgeous blue eyes, and called,
"Hullo Sheik!" He smiled. Zelda noticed he had a new tunic on.
"Hello Link." She leapt down. "There is one thing that stays constant over Time..a true friendship. A feeling in the heart that grows stronger over time...The passion of Friendship will blossom into a righteous power, and through that power, you will know the way to go...This song is dedicated to the power of the heart....."She pulled out her lute. How the heck did he become so cute?!? "The Bolero of Fire." She strummed the strings, weaving the notes into a melody sounding of power. Linkpulled his ocarina out, accompaning her tune. Zelda loved this song dearly. It was over too soon, though, and her heart ached to say;
"Until we meet again, Link...Goodbye." She pulled a Deku nut out, and threw it to the ground. She re-appeared up on a rise that had lava simmering in the center. She heard Link saying;
"Let's go save the Gorons, Navi." He ran into a shallow cave, and dissapeared down the ladder leading to the Temple. Zelda leaped from the high rise onto the earth below, narrowly missing another lava pool. She looked back to Goron City, and then ran that way. Flying up the dark steps, she followed the strains of the forest tune to find the Lost Woods exit. She ran into the dark tunnel, and found herself in the woods again. Zelda searched for some source of water, her throat parched. She went another dark passage to the left, and suddenly came across what she was looking for. It was a pool of some sort. Zelda ran up to it, and threw her face into the water, and glugged. She had not had anything to drink the day before. But, suddenly, she noticed a door or something down at the bottom of the pool. She dove into the pool, and swam towards the opening. She squeezed through it, and resurfaed in...Zora's River.
"Oh well...I was going to come here anyway." She said to herself. She climbed out of the water to see that snow was falling. She shivered, and quickly dove through the large waterfall covering Zora's Domain.
"BRRRR!" She chattered through clenched teeth. She walked stiffly up the stone steps, and greeted King Zora, though he probably couldn't hear her.
"Hello, King Zora." She said, and climbed onto his throne. She then ran into the small tunnel behind it, to see that the ice had turned into water here.
"Great...now I'm going to have to swim across Zora's Fountain." She muttered to herself. She stepped into the ankle-deep water, and ran into the fountain. To her releif, the fountain was somewhat frozen. Large icebergs floated in the water, capped with snow. She climbed onto a stone platform, wondering what it had once been used for, and gingerly stepped onto another. Hah. Easy. She stood, strategizing how to get across the other iceburgs that twirled like a child's spinning top in the water. Suddenly, a pain shot through her side, and she fell into the water, along with a huge rock. Zelda saw the octorok go back under the water, as not to be seen, and the cold water made her gasp. She stiffly hauled herself back onto the iceburg, and took a blind leap off of it, hoping to land on the next. Luckily, she did. She hauled her numb body to the next, and so on, until she found herself at the entrance to an icy cave.
"T-the iccce cav-v-verns." She whispered to herself. She stepped inside the dark cave,wishing she was back in the volcano crater. Impa had told her the best place to meet Link, and so, she had her destination in mind. She suddenly arrived in a room filled with ice figures, but in the corner, she saw a hollow in the wall. Knowing that was a shortcut to where she wanted to be, she leapt up into the hollow, and dove into the cold water. In it, she saw a thin layer of Ice blocking her way, and she heaved all her weight into it. Luckily, she shattered it on the first blow. Zelda then swam towards the surface again. A white wolfos howled at her as she rose to the surface, and she quickly pulled herself out of the water, and leapt onto a shelf of ice that hung over a door, out of the wolfo's reach. Zelda suddenly noticed that it was much warmer in this room, even though it looked cold. Zelda looked around, studying the room. The ceiling seemed to stretch up forever, and the whole room sparkled like a diamond. The ice on Zelda's clothes was melting, and she hunkered down to wait for Link.
She heard the door beneath open, and Link and his faerie raced in, to be met by that darn wolfos. Link killed it with ease, and a large wooden chest materialized before him. Link shoved it open, and grunted as he pulled out a new pair of boots, capped with iron. Zelda murmured;
"Good. You got them,Link." She leapt down.
"Sheik!!!" Link was obviously startled. Zelda continued;
"If you came here to meet the Zoras, you wasted your time. This is all that's left..Time passes, people move. Like a river's flow, it never ends. A childish mind shall turn to noble ambition. Young love becomes deep affection. The clear water's surface reflects growth. Use the Serenade of Water to reflect upon yourself." Zelda picked up her lute, and plucked out a cool, liquid tune. It sounded fantastic when Link joined in too.
"Link, good luck." Zelda said.
"Sheik, wait. I've got to tell you something." Link said. Zelda quickly threw a Deku nut to the earth. *POOF* She dissapeared and found herself facing the dark tunnel leading into Zora's Domain. Zelda was really tired, and decided to go home to Impa for awhile.
Zelda was exhausted by the time she got home. Every muscle ached in her wiry body, and her eyelids drooped. She trudged up to her home, and Impa ran up to her, saying;
"Sheik! Oh come in, sweetie! You must be starving! Oh, you're tired, aren't you?" She fussed and clucked over Zelda, and set her down in front of a bowl of onion soup. Zelda slurped ravenously, despite her exhaution.
"Thank you, Impa!" She exclaimed, having not eaten for a day. Soon, her bowl was empty, and Zelda, yawning, cradled her head in her arms, and fell asleep at the table. Impa saw, and gently shook her shoulder to wake her. The Princess looked up, and said;
"Oh.....sorry...." She yawned.
"Go to bed, Princess. Impa said. Zelda dragged herself into her room, falling asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.
Zelda awoke to the dawn's light the next day. She got up, feeling refreshed, and got dressed, brushed her hair, chewed a mint leaf to get rid of morning breath, etc, and went downstairs to eat. She was still hungry, and ate more than usual. While she was eating, she saw a vision of Link, fighting some giant oysters or something. She decided she had to leave to meet him, just to see his handsome face again;
"Impa, I'm going to Lake Hylia to meet Link, OK?" Zelda said.
"Alright. Farewell, Daughter." Impa waved.
"Do you think Daria would let me borrow a horse?" Zelda asked, refering to the cucco lady.
"Probably. Bye, Zel." Impa said. Zelda leapt up, and headed towards Daria's stable, where she sat feeding her cuccos.
"Daria, could I borrow a horse? I'm going to Lake Hylia." Zelda said.
"Fine." Daria replied
"Thanks, Dar." Zelda lead a white stallion from a stall, and mounted it. She clucked to him, and was off towards the lake.
Zelda stopped the horse, and let him graze behind the Lakeside Laborotory. She then ran across the bridge leading to an island, brushing off hungry Guays as she went. When she reached the island, Zelda sat in the cool shade of a tree, releif from the midday sun. She was suddenly startled by a gurgling sound. The near-empty lake was refilling!!!Link did it again. Zelda turned around to see Link decend from the heavens in a blue light. Zelda was amazed, but she didn't say anything.
"Hi Sheik." Link smiled at her.
"You did it Link. You defeated the monster." Zelda murmured back. She guestured towards the lake. "Look at that, Link. The Lake is once again filled with pure, clear water. All is as it was here."
"Awww.It was nothing." Link was blushing. He turned around to look at the view. Then, Zelda leapt up into a tree while she had the chance. When Link spun around again, he said;
"Wha-where'd she go?" He asked Navi, who just shrugged. Zelda then dove into the lake, swimming underwater for the other side. When she got there, gasping for breath, she got back on her horse, flying for Kakariko. She sensed something was wrong.
When Zelda got back, the village was aflame. Impa was staring into the empty well.
"Impa! What happened?"
"There is a Shadow Creature....He's escaping....Sheik, I must go to the Shadow Temple to re-seal him...If I don't come back, don't be alarmed, for if it is defeated, I will find my powers as a Sage, and I'll be in the Chamber of the Sages until Ganondorf is resealed into the Dark World." Impa gave Zelda a hug. "Tell Link to help me.I'll come back eventually." She ran towards the graveyard, and was gone. Right then, Link stumbled into the village to find it as it was. Zelda saw him run up to her, and she yelled;
"Get back, Link!!!!!" Zelda saw the seal crack, and as it did, a bluish gas leaked out. Zelda braced herself for whatever it would do. The Shadow spirit picked her up, and flailed her through the air like a rag doll. Zelda screamed as she was thrown a great distance. As she landed, a horrible pain exploded through her. She groaned, unable to move, the breath knocked out of her.
"Sheik!" Link ran to Zelda's side.
No, don't. Zelda thought, for the creature was coming back.
"Run." She croaked.
"Never. I'll teach this guy a lesson." Link said. But the shadow caught him off guard, and picked him up, slamming him up against a house. Zelda screamed as he fell limp to the ground, a trickle of blood oozing from his forehead. She used the rest of her strength to pull herself up, and to Link's side. Lovingly, she pulled his head into her lap, and wiped the blood from his face. Suddenly, rain began to fall. The cool drops dripped down Link's face, reviving him.
"Unghhh...My head..." He mumbled.
"Looks like you're finally coming around." Zelda said in his ear. "The monster has gone to the Shadow Temple. Impa is trying to re-seal him in the well, but she can't do this alone. You must help her. I will teach you the song that will take you to the Temple. The song that draws you into the infinate darkness that absorbs even time....the Nocturne of Shadow." Zelda pulled out her lute, and played a sorrowful song along with Link.
"You go to the Temple. I'll stay here and help the villagers." Zelda said, even though the heavy rain had already put out most of the fire.
"OK...Bye Sheik." Link said.
"Good luck." Zelda murmured.
For that night, Zelda helped put out the remaining fires, and worried about Link. The Shadow Temple was, according to Impa, full of nightmarish ghouls. She hoped Link woul come out alive. In the early morning, Zelda closed her eyes for a second to rest, but saw Link fighting a ghastly monster with hands not attatched to it's body. Link was slashing away at it's red eye, and Zelda saw it disentegrate.
He made it!!!!!!!!!!
Zelda , in order to beat him to the Spirit Temple, took the white stallion from the stables again, and rode off towards Gerudo Valley.
When she arrived in the fortress of the Gerudo, she wasn't welcomed. The Guards ran up to her, yelling and waving scimitars at her. One stole her horse. Zelda was bound in ropes, and the red headed women debated what to do with her. One woman in a white uniform suggested;
'Why don't we leave her out in the desert for dead?" All the other Gerudo seemed to like this idea, so they picked Zelda up over their heads, and marched into the desert with her. Zelda pretended to struggle, but really liked the fact that she was getting a free ride to her destination. A blinding sandstorm scoured her skin, and she shut her eyes. Minutes later, she was thrown into the sand and untied.
"Good luck finding your way back to wherever you came from!" They laughed. Zelda opened her eyes to see the Spirit Temple nearby. Quickly racing to the Temple, Zelda hoisted herself up onto an archway in front of the Temple, waiting for Link.
"Hey, Sheik!" Link cried up to her. Zelda jumped. She must have dozed off. She quickly jumped down, and said;
"Past present future. Time is a river you can sail up and down, using the Master Sword as a ship. The port for this ship is in in the Temple of Time......This song will lead a child back to the desert... The Requiem of Spirit." Zelda pulled out the lute again, plucking out a sad tune, and Link followed along.
"Until we meet again, Link." Zelda pulled out another Deku seed, and willed herself to the Temple of Time as she threw it down. Zelda re-appeared in the dusty Temple. Sighing, she shook the sand out of her clothing, and hid in the shadows, waiting for Link to return with all the Sages awakened. That, Zelda decided, would be when he would tell him who she really was.
"Hello?........Helloo?" His faerie flitted in and out of his shirt as he was yelling. Zelda pulled herself up, and approached Link.....
"Hi, Link.."
"Hey." He replied. Zelda cleared her throat.
"You've done it!!!!!! Now, it is time for the final showdown with the King of Evil!!!!!.....But, first I have things I want to tell only to you...."
"What?" Link asked, puzzled.
"When Ganondorf touched the Triforce, it divided into three parts; Power, Wisdom, Courage. He only has the Triforce of Power. The two lost parts, Wisdom and Courage, were put within two chosen by destiny. Those two shall bear the Triforce mark on their hands.The bearer of the Triforce of Courage is.........You, Link!!!!"
"M-me?" Link studdered.
"Yes....And the bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom, destined to become the leader of the Sages..." Zelda looked at her hand. The Triforce mark glistened. She held it up, and they were both blinded by a flash of light. Zelda looked down, gasping. She was wearing the dress Impa had given her.
"Zelda? Is it you?" Link asked her.
"It's me, Link." Zelda said. "Here, take this. It's a treasure that destroys all evil." She lifted her hands to the ceiling, using her power to fashion a special weapon. "The Sacred Arrow of Light!!!" She handed it to Link as it decended to them.
"Thank you......Zelda, you're the most...wonderful.....beautiful....person I've ever met...."
"Ohhhh....." Zelda threw herself into his open arms. ".....Link, you're gonna have to protect me when I seal Ganondorf into the Sacred Realm, OK?"
"Anything for you. I love you." Link said, and kissed her forehead.
Omigosh!!!! Zelda thought.
"I love you too." She tilted her face upward, but right before their lips touched, a rumbling filled the Temple. Ceiling tiles fell loose, and crashed to the floor.
"W-what's happening?" Zelda cried, stepping back.
"I dunno." Link answered. Navi flitted all over the place in fright. Suddenly, Zelda was trapped inside a pink crystal.
"LINK!!!!" She cried. Link ran up to her. A booming voice rattled the Temple.
"Princess Zelda, you foolish traitor! I commend you for avoiding my pursuit for seven long years....But you were foolish....I knew you would reveal yourself to me if I let this KID run around!!!! Ha ha ha ha.
"Let her go!!!!" Link yelled , drawing his sword. "Come out and fight like a man!!!!"
"Ha ha ha! If you want to save Zelda...come to my castle!!" Zelda found herself rising off the ground, up into the ceiling. Somehow, she saw herself shimmer, and fade away. Then everything went black.
Zelda awoke to some ear splitting organ music. She stood, and stretched as much as her prison would allow. Suddenly, a loud sound alerted her attention. The sound of a heavy door opening. Zelda saw the familliar green figure, and a faerie.
"Link! You came!" She cried.
"Heh heh heh." The terrible organ music stopped. "The Triforce parts are resonating. They are combining into one again...." Ganondorf whipped around. "These toys are too much for you....I command you to give your Triforces to me!!!!" Zelda gasped as Ganondorf used his power to surround Link in a purple vortex. She saw Navi swirl around Link, apparently healing any wounds he had, and she flitted up to Zelda.
"Dont worry. Link can do anything.....He did this for you, ya know...One look at that castle without knowing Ganondorf had you held capture would have sent him back to the forest." She piped in her high voice. Tears rolled down Zelda's face.
"I love him, Navi....I'm worried...." Zelda trailed off. She turned to watch the battle along with the faerie. It was progressing slowly. They were bouncing a crackling ball of energy back and forth. Ganondorf threw it at Link, and Link deflected it with his sword, and Ganondorf would pull his cloak over his body to bounce it back. Suddenly, Zelda heard a groan of pain come from the King of Evil. He hung limply in the air. She saw Link draw a Sacred arrow from his quiver, set it in his bow. Zelda saw him pull the string taut, and fire it at Ganondorf. Ganondorf crackled with electricity, and slumped to the ground. Link ran up, and jammed his sword into the King of Evil's heart. Zelda gasped as he spit blood, and, breathing heavily, choked out;
"Me?......The great Ganondorf?....Beaten....by...this....KID?!?" He spit more blood. "Link!!!!" He let out a roar of pain, and fell to the floor, dead. Zelda saw herself being lowered to the floor. Link awaited her, grinning.
"Omigosh Link!! You did it!!!" She looked to Ganondorf's body. "Ganondorf.....Pitiful man.... Without a strong, righteous mind, he could not control the Triforce." The tower began to shake.
"C'mon, Zel!" The tower's collapsing!!" Link cried. They ran, with faerie in tow, down the flights of stairs, avoiding rubble, and falling debris. Right before the tower fell completely, Zelda and Link ran out the front entrance. Zelda felt a wave of releif wash over her whole body, and, collapsing into Link's arms, she sighed;
"It's over.....it's finally over!!!" She stroked Link's cheek. He kissed her, this time on the mouth. Zelda felt a tingle run through her. She knew then that she truly loved him. But, a loud thumping shook the small island.
"What's happening?" Zelda cried, squeezing Link's hand.
"I dunno. Stay here. I'll check it out." Link kissed Zelda one more time, and stalked towards the pile of debris. Suddenly, Ganondorf flew out, eyes glowing. He transfrmed into a horrible monster. Zelda tried to run to Link, but a line of fire cut her off from the battle. She could just watch as Link's sword was knocked from his hands. Zelda couldn't toss it over the fire. She saw a long, hard battle. Sometimes, Link took a hard blow, sometimes Ganon would collapse, and Link would get some good hits at him. Finally, Ganon lay, stunned, and the fire died down.
"Finish him off, Link!!!! Kill him with the Master Sword!!!" She called. Link ran over, and picked up the sword. He ran to Ganon, and slashed. Zelda then concentrated her powers to surround him in a yellow light. She called;
"Sages...Now!!!" She watched in awe as he faded into the Sacred Realm. Cries of
"Curse you!" Floated in the still air. Link ran over to Zelda, saying;
"We did it!!!!" They kissed again. Zelda saw something;
"Look!!!!" She cried as Hyrule Castle appeared. The lava faded, and the sky turned a peaceful blue. Every guard came back from the dead, and cheered them. Zelda and Link embraced. They had saved Hyrule.
Link
Link (リンク, Rinku?) (Voice actor/actress: Nobuyuki Hiyama (adult Link) Fujiko Takimoto (child Link)), the Hero of Time, is the protagonist of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. He is a Hylian who was raised as a Kokiri in Kokiri Forest. Using the Master Sword, he can travel between his childhood and adulthood to change the course of time and ultimately defeat the main villain, Ganondorf. Like most other iterations of Link in the series, he is left-handed.
Ganondorf (Ganon)
Ganondorf (ガノンドロフ, Ganondorofu?) (Voice actor: Takashi Nagasako) is the principle antagonist of The Legend of Zelda series, and he makes his first chronological appearance in Ocarina of Time. He seeks to claim the mythical Triforce, and use its powers to conquer the land of Hyrule.
Princess Zelda (Sheik)
Zelda (ゼルダ, Zeruda?) (Voice actress: Jun Mizusawa) is the princess of Hyrule. She possesses magical powers that allow her to foresee Ganondorf's assault against Hyrule, and helps Link access the Master Sword in the Temple of Time by collecting the three Spiritual Stones as a child. As an adult, she disguises herself as Sheik (シーク, Shīku?), to again help Link.
Navi
Navi (ナビィ, Nabi?) (voice actress: Kaori Mizuhashi) is a blue fairy who is Link's "sidekick" throughout the game. She is instructed by the Great Deku Tree in Kokiri Forest to assist Link in his quest to stop Ganondorf. All Kokiri have companion fairies, but because Link is actually a Hylian, he never received one until Navi joined him near the beginning of the events in Ocarina of Time. She is seen departing from him at the end of the game.
From a gameplay perspective, Navi functions primarily as a guide that points out clues in the environment and helps the player learn the controls and advance in the game. Most of her hints are about how to progress in the story or defeat enemies. She can also be used to lock on enemies in the game, items and other characters. She is one of the few characters with any voice-acting in the series, and the only character who (aside from Link in The Wind Waker) actually uses English words, such as "Hey", "Look", "Listen", "Watch out" and "Hello".
The Six Sages
The Sages were the guardians of the Sacred Realm and the crafters of the Master Sword. Over the years the numbers of Sages dwindled until only Rauru, the Sage of Light, remained. Rauru and Sheik reveal to Link that new Sages must be awakened, however, because of Ganondorf's influence, the "awakening call" from the five temples around Hyrule is unable to be heard until Link purges the evil from the temples.
Rauru
Rauru (ラウル?) is an old Hylian man who is the Sage of Light and an architect of the Temple of Time. He is the last remaining Ancient Sage. Rauru shares his name with a town in The Adventure of Link. Rauru is introduced to the player when Link awakens from his seven-year slumber in the Chamber of the Sages deep within the Sacred Realm. Rauru explains to Link where he is, what has happened while he was asleep, and gives him the Light Medallion, a symbol of Rauru's power. In the manga, it is revealed that Rauru was only a spirit who lived on in the Chamber of the Sages. This trait seems to be shared with the other Sages.
Saria
Saria (サリア?) is a green-haired Kokiri girl who befriended Link while he was growing up in Kokiri Forest. She gives Link the Fairy Ocarina, Link's first instrument in Ocarina of Time, as a memento of their friendship as he leaves Kokiri Forest for Hyrule Castle. She later teaches him "Saria's Song", the magical powers of which enable Link to communicate with her from afar. When Link returns as an adult, he contacts Saria with the ocarina. She explained that the forest spirits were calling out to her from the Forest Temple. When she went to investigate, evil spirits and monsters imprisoned her. Link rescues her after defeating the four Poe Sisters and Phantom Ganon. Saria is awakened as the Forest Sage and gives Link the Forest Medallion.
In the game, Saria is one of only three Kokiri to enter the Lost Woods (the other two being Mido and Fado). The Kokiri children admired Saria for her kindness and for being the only one of her people to thoroughly navigate the Lost Woods. The Kokiri did not know she was a Sage. Saria's favorite place in the forest was the Sacred Forest Meadow. When Link is an adult, he finds Mido in the Lost Woods, who comments that Saria had a secret love interest in Link.
Saria shares her name with the town of Saria in The Adventure of Link.
Darunia
Darunia (ダルニア?) is the leader of the Goron race and resides in Goron City on Death Mountain. When Link first meets Darunia, Darunia is upset because the cavern containing the Goron's food source is overrun by Dodongos and has been sealed off by Ganondorf as punishment for refusing to turn over the Goron Ruby (also known as the Spiritual Stone of Fire). Once he is cheered up by Link playing "Saria's Song", his demeanor softens. He gives Link the Goron's Bracelet, allowing him to pluck and use bomb flowers, and asks him to clear the Dodongos from Dodongo's Cavern, promising to bestow upon him the Goron Ruby as a reward. After Link completes the task, Darunia rewards Link with the Goron Ruby and makes him his "Sworn Brother". Somewhere in the following seven years, Darunia has a son named after Link. After Ganondorf conquers Hyrule, he intends to feed the Goron race to the ancient dragon Volvagia, who was sealed away long ago by a Goron hero, but has been revived by Ganondorf. Link hears of this and meets Darunia in the Fire Temple, at which point Darunia charges Link to free the Gorons held captive while Darunia attempts and fails to kill Volvagia. After Link frees the Gorons and defeats Volvagia, Darunia awakens as the Sage of Fire and gives Link the Fire Medallion. Darunia shares his name with a town in The Adventure of Link.
Princess Ruto
Ruto (ルト?) is the daughter of King Zora and the princess of the Zora race. As a child, she has a bossy and spoiled attitude, and is somewhat of a tomboy like Princess Zelda. Link first meets her in the belly of Lord Jabu-Jabu, the Zora's sacred guardian for whom she dutifully cares, who had accidentally swallowed her and the Spiritual Stone of Water—the Zora's Sapphire—while being fed. The Zora's Sapphire is Ruto's most treasured possession, as it once was her mother's, and she thus demands that Link carry her around Lord Jabu-Jabu's innards and help her find it. Ruto's mother requested that she give it to the man who would be her husband, and so, after Link rescues her, she gives it to him and considers her and Link to be engaged.
After Ganondorf takes over Hyrule, Zora's Domain freezes over and traps the Zoras under the ice. Ruto is rescued by Sheik and immediately heads to the Water Temple to find the cause of this curse. When Link finds her in the temple, she scolds him for keeping her waiting seven years to marry him, saying, "I have not forgotten the vows we made to each other." When Link completes the Water Temple, Ruto is awakened as the Sage of Water, and gives Link the Water Medallion. Thereafter she states that while she would love nothing more than to offer her eternal love to him, they cannot be together, at least not until his quest is over.
During the childhood chapters in the Ocarina of Time manga, Ruto aims to be swallowed by Jabu-Jabu on purpose because she disapproves of the husband her father arranged for her to marry. She gives Link the Zora's Sapphire out of her new-found feelings for him after he saved her life. She has a huge crush on Link and truly believes that they are meant for each other. Ruto is similar to Queen Rutela, from Twilight Princess (whom also wears the Zora's Sapphire as a necklace), and shares her name with a town in The Adventure of Link.
Impa
Impa (インパ, Inpa?) is the only member of the Sheikah race seen in the game, and the caretaker of Princess Zelda. She opened Kakariko Village, which was once a home to the Sheikah, to the public. Early in the game, she takes Zelda away from the castle to escape from Ganondorf. During the seven years in which Link is frozen by the power of the Master Sword, Impa teaches Zelda to disguise herself as Sheik, a Sheikah, to hide from Ganondorf. When Link is an adult, Impa enters the Shadow Temple to seal Bongo Bongo, a creature which escapes from the well in Kakariko Village. Sheik reveals Impa originally defeated Bongo Bongo. Following Link's defeat of Bongo Bongo, Impa awakens as the Sage of Shadow. Unlike the rest of the Sages, except Zelda, she does not share her name with a town in The Adventure of Link.
Impa declares that she is the last of her race, the Sheikah, in Ocarina of Time; however, in Twilight Princess, which follows some time after, an old woman named Impaz says she is also the last of her kind, although she does not elaborate on what she means. Impaz says her name is descended from the one who founded the hidden village.
Nabooru
Main article: Nabooru
Nabooru (ナボール, Nabōru?) is a high-ranking Gerudo, who is Ganondorf's second in command. Unlike her peers, she possesses her own free will and conscience. She expresses disdain towards Ganondorf, and is aware of his sinister motives. Nabooru ultimately chooses to leave Ganondorf, and pursue her own solo career by first finding the Silver Gauntlets in the Spirit Temple and disrupt Ganondorf's operations. She promises to reward Link if he helps her find the gauntlets.
Link manages to retrieve the gauntlets, but Koume and Kotake, Ganondorf's surrogate mothers, abduct Nabooru, and brainwash her. Link time travels seven years into the future, to unlock the Spirit Temple's other secrets (as Link cannot wear the Silver Gauntlets as a child). Seven years later, Link encounters and battles Nabooru, who now serves as one of Ganon's Iron Knuckles. He eventually progresses to defeat Koume and Kotake, prompting Nabooru to awaken as Sage of Spirit. She gives Link the Spirit Medallion, the power of which is later used to save Hyrule and defeat Ganondorf.
In a manga, Koume and Kotake order Nabooru to make sure Sheik would not betray Ganondorf. She interrogates Link when he comes to prison. A fight ensues, and Link manages to free her from Ganondorf's control by destroying a gem on her forehead. Nabooru later goes on to rescue her comrades from their brainwashed states. Like several other sages, Nabooru shares her name with a town in The Adventure of Link.
Secondary characters
Biggoron
Biggoron is a giant Goron living atop Death Mountain who will forge the Biggoron's Sword for Link if Link brings him special eye drops. The Biggoron's Sword is stronger and larger than Link's other swords, but it must be held with both hands, so Link cannot hold his shield while the sword is in use. Biggoron has a smaller brother called Medigoron.
Bonooru
Bonooru is a stationary scarecrow who is friends with Pierre the scarecrow. When Link shows Bonooru his Ocarina, Bonooru asks for Link to play him a tune to see if he can memorize it. The song Link plays becomes the Scarecrow's Song, and is used later in the game to summon Pierre.
Boss Carpenter
The Boss Carpenter, is a large bald man in charge of a group of carpenters. During Link's childhood, the Boss Carpenter and his workers are working on construction in Kakariko Village on the orders of Impa, who hopes the village will someday be a "True City". The carpenters are lazy however, and the boss tries his best to whip them into shape. The Boss Carpenter's family seems to be some of the only residents of the village, including his son and daughter. The Boss Carpenter is ashamed of his son for "sitting around all day", and is met with a similar reception as his son calls him "disgusting".
Seven years later, during Ganondorf's reign of Hyrule, the carpenters have departed from Kakariko Village after successfully completing only one building. They have now set up a tent in Gerudo Valley in order to restore the bridge that the Gerudo thieves have destroyed to ward off intruders. The Boss Carpenter however, is the only one remaining, as his carpenters have all abandoned him in a failed attempt to join the Gerudo thieves. The predominantly female bandits reject the lazy carpenters, instead holding them prisoner in seperate cells throughout their fortress. Link sets out to rescue all four of the carpenters, and when he does the Gerudo acknowledge his strength and give him a Gerudo's Card, allowing him to roam the Fortress freely as an honorary member of the Gerudo. After a scolding from the Boss Carpenter, the returned carpenters rebuild the bridge in Gerudo Valley.
Carpenters
Shiro, Jiro, Ichiro and Sabooru are four carpenters who work for the Boss Carpenter. When Link is a child, the carpenters are working on construction in Kakariko Village.
Seven years later, during Ganondorf's reign of Hyrule, the carpenters have set up a tent in Gerudo Valley to restore the bridge that the Gerudo thieves destroyed to ward off intruders. However, the Boss Carpenter is the only one remaining, as his employees have all abandoned him to join the Gerudo band of thieves. The female bandits reject the carpenters, instead holding them prisoner in separate cells throughout their fortress. Link rescues them all, and, after a scolding from the Boss Carpenter, they rebuild the bridge in Gerudo Valley.
Dampé
Dampé is a hunchback who serves as the gravekeeper for Kakariko Village. He digs in Kakariko Graveyard if paid by Link, and will give Link anything he finds. By the time Link reaches adulthood, Dampé has died and been buried in a labyrinthine tomb in the graveyard; he rewards Link with the Hookshot after Link chases Dampé's spirit through the maze.
Epona
Epona (エポナ?) is Link's horse. She was brought up by Malon and Talon on Lon Lon Ranch and can be summoned by "Epona's Song". Link first meets her when he is a child and she a foal, but she is wild and runs away from him until Malon teaches Link Epona's Song. When Link returns to the ranch as an adult, it has been taken over by Ingo, and Epona once again runs away from him. Link, after taming Epona using Epona's Song, participates in two races with Ingo, and wins Epona. From that point on, he can summon the horse in most locations using the song and she provides him with fast transportation around Hyrule.
Fado
Fado is a blonde Kokiri girl who, during the child section of the game, stands at the end of the bridges leading from Saria's house, and in the adult section of the game, appears as part of the Biggoron's Sword quest. She replaces the boss carpenter's son in the Lost Woods after a certain quest is complete. She demands Link give her the mushroom-based medicine meant for the man, and in return, she gives Link a saw that the man left behind.
Flat & Sharp
Flat & Sharp are two musician brothers who were once the Royal Family's personal composers. During the time of the war, Ganondorf was on a quest gaining all the knowledge he could about the location of the Triforce. He had learned about the brothers believing they possessed the Song of Time. In actuality they had composed the Sun's Song. Upon meeting Ganondorf, the musical siblings learned he wished to gain access to the forbidden Sacred Realm. When they refused to acquiesce to the Gerudo stranger in black armor, Ganondorf sent them to their graves. In death, they appear as Poes in the Kakariko Graveyard. They attack people who read their tombstones. Should Link himself defeat them, their green, smiling souls apologize for their behavior and they engage Link in conversation. They explain their relationship with the Royal Family and that their melodic labors produced a song that affects time. When playing the Sun's Song, one can change daytime into night, and vice versa. The Royal Composer Brothers were Flat the Younger and Sharp the Elder.
Granny
Granny is an old woman who runs the Potion Shop in Kakariko Village. Her house is located in the back of the village, which is closed when Link is a child. When he is an adult, her shop is open and she sells the red, green, and blue potions. She also has a pet tiger cub. Based on conversations with other villagers, Granny is undeniably the wife to the village's Boss Carpenter and mother to the Cuckoo Girl and Village Bum. Her medicinal colleague is the Lakeside Laboratory scientist and aquaculturist.
Great Deku Tree
The Great Deku Tree is a large tree with a human-like face, who watches over the Kokiri who live in Kokiri Forest in Ocarina of Time.
When Ocarina of Time begins, the Great Deku Tree is suffering from a curse cast upon him by Ganondorf in an effort to gain the Spiritual Stone of the Forest, which is in the Deku Tree's possession. Knowing Link's destiny, the Deku Tree sends Navi to summon the boy and asks him to destroy the curse, the source of which is a giant spider named Queen Gohma. Although Link defeats Gohma, the Deku Tree reveals he was doomed before Link had begun; before he dies, he gives Link the Kokiri Emerald and implores him to seek out the "Princess of Destiny" (Princess Zelda) at Hyrule Castle. As he leaves, Mido is hostile to Link, as he suspects that he is responsible for the Deku Tree's death. After adult Link completes the Forest Temple, however, he discovers a sprout near the Great Deku Tree, which grows into the Great Deku Sprout.
Great Deku Sprout
The Great Deku Sprout is the rebirth of the late Great Deku Tree. He sprouts up after Link defeats Phantom Ganon and Saria awakens as the Sage of Forest. He is the one who reveals Link's true identity as a Hylian, not a Kokiri, showing that he retains some of the memories of the dead Great Deku Tree. He tells Link further that his mother entrusted him to the Great Deku Tree to be raised as a Kokiri, and that she died shortly thereafter.
Great Fairies
In Ocarina of Time, the Great Fairies are depicted as large, magical, female beings capable of enchanting powers, and each one grants Link various spells and abilities as he progresses through the game. They reside in underground fountains, and require "Zelda's Lullaby" to be played to appear, as proof of loyalty to the Royal Family. Six exist in Hyrule and are situated across the land, but their shrines are usually hidden somehow. Each of them also refill Link's life and magic meters during subsequent visits.
Happy Mask Salesman
The bizarre man known as the Happy Mask Salesman first appeared in Ocarina of Time, offering to let Link work for him as a Happy Mask Salesman. After selling four masks, the Salesman gives Link the Mask of Truth, allowing him to understand the Gossip Stones scattered about Hyrule.
Ingo
Ingo (インゴー, Ingō?) is a tall, lanky man with a large black moustache who bears a striking resemblance to fellow Nintendo character Luigi. When Link first meets Ingo, he is working as a farmhand at Lon Lon Ranch. He is a hard worker but complains about how he must do all the work while Talon, the ranch's actual owner, just lies around and sleeps all day. When Link returns to Lon Lon Ranch seven years later as an adult, he finds that Ingo, with the assistance of Ganondorf, has taken over the ranch and kicked Talon out. Once Link wins Epona from Ingo and finds Talon in Kakariko Village, Talon returns to the ranch and takes back ownership. Ingo, apparently regretful of his actions, and fearful of being punished by Ganondorf for losing Epona to Link, returns to working as a farmhand. Malon observes that Ingo "must have been tempted by evil powers".
Kaepora Gaebora
Kaepora Gaebora (ケポラ・ゲボラ, Kepora Gebora?) is a talking owl who assists Link in The Legend of Zelda series. One of the gossip stones in Ocarina of Time (found in the Sacred Forest Meadow) says that he is the reincarnation of an ancient Sage. In addition, in the GameCube version of Ocarina Of Time, another Gossip Stone in the same area tells Link that Kaepora Gaebora "may look big and heavy, but its character is rather lighthearted." Despite him being pretty much right behind Link throughout his childhood in the Ocarina of Time, he is not encountered by the adult Link but is shown to still be keeping an eye on him, as he can be glimpsed in the shadows of the Spirit Temple at the time Link learns the Requiem of Spirit, but other than that he makes no appearance until Link completes the child half of the Spirit Temple.
He claimed (during his meeting with young Link in the Desert Colossus) to not have believed in the stories telling of a Hero of Time, making him the only person in the game to do so. An unnamed owl with Kaepora's appearance and personalty also appears in Majora's Mask, first in Woodfall Swamp to teach Link the Song of Soaring, and again in Snowhead to help Link cross a large abyss. There are statues to his likeness spread across Termina, mainly used to warp to with the Song of Soaring, but also as an alternative means to using the Song of Time to save the game. By saving this way, all of Link's items and Rupees are kept but he does not go back in time.
King Zora
King Zora XVI (キングゾーラ, Kingu Zōra?) is the ruler of the Zora race. He is an obese, fish-like creature who values the loyalty of his people and demands respect for their patron deity, Lord Jabu-Jabu. When Link visits the cavernous interior of Zora's Domain, King Zora is always seated in his throne, protecting the entrance to Zora's Fountain. When the King of Hyrule ended "a fierce war" decades earlier and reunited the Kingdom of Hyrule, he reaffirmed his friendship and association with the Zoran patriarch.
Shortly after Link begins his quest, he meets King Zora, whose daughter, Princess Ruto, has gone missing. After Link shows him a message from Ruto stating that she has been swallowed by Lord Jabu-Jabu, King Zora asks Link to rescue her and grants him access to the sacred Zora's Fountain, where Lord Jabu-Jabu resides.
When Link returns to Zora's Domain as an adult, he finds King Zora frozen in a giant crystal of Red Ice. As a reward for thawing him out with Blue Fire, King Zora gives Link the Zora Tunic; if Link already owns a Zora Tunic, the Zora King offers a kiss. King Zora also partakes in the trading sequence side-quest for Biggoron's Sword after he is thawed.
Know-It-All Brothers
The Know-It-All Brothers are three Kokiri brothers who live on a hill next to the Forest Training Center in Kokiri Forest. They teach the player how to use the subscreens and C buttons.
Kotake and Koume (Twinrova)
Twinrova (双生魔導師ツインローバ, Sōsei Madōshi Twinrōba?), the twin witches Kotake and Koume, who later fuse to become Twinrova, are the bosses of the Spirit Temple. Twinrova consists of two witches, Koume (コウメ, Kōme?) and Kotake (コタケ?), who use the elements of fire and ice, respectively. They are the surrogate mothers of Ganondorf.
Link of the Gorons
After Link defeats King Dodongo, restoring Goron access to Dodongo's Cavern, which is the Gorons' primary source of food, he becomes the hero of the Gorons. In honor of Link, Darunia, the leader of the Gorons, names his son after him; the actual name, however, varies depending on the name the player chooses for the main protagonist (i.e. Link) prior to beginning the game.
Link meets Link of the Gorons (as he refers to himself) after his seven-year slumber. Apart from Link of the Gorons, there are hardly any Gorons left in Goron City, the only other two being Medigoron and the shopkeeper. Link of the Gorons at first thinks Link is one of Ganondorf's minions, but he soon realizes Link is in fact the great hero and "Dodongo Buster" he heard so much about, and for whom he is named, even though the two have never met before. He tells Link about what is going on with Volvagia, Darunia, and the missing Gorons. Link of the Gorons then begs Link to save them, even though Darunia told him not to let anybody follow him to the Fire Temple. He gives Link the Goron Tunic and tells him where to find the secret passage that leads to the Fire Temple.
Lord Jabu-Jabu
- Further information: Jabu-Jabu
Lord Jabu-Jabu is the patron deity of the Zora race and as such is worshipped by them. He is a giant fish who resides in Zora's Fountain. When seeing Jabu-Jabu, it is customary to bring a fish as an offering. Link encounters Jabu-Jabu as a child, when he is sent by King Zora to rescue Princess Ruto from inside his belly, as she was swallowed whole while carrying out her duties as his attendant. When Link defeats the monster Barinade inside Jabu-Jabu and frees Ruto, it is said that Jabu-Jabu was cursed by Ganondorf. Jabu-Jabu is not present when Link is an adult.
Malon
Malon (マロン, maron?) is the daughter of Talon, and works at Lon Lon Ranch with her father and Ingo. As a child, Link first meets her on the path leading to Hyrule Castle where she is looking for her father. She gives Link an egg which hatches to wake up Talon.
Medigoron
A large Goron who gives Link the Giant's Knife, a very frail sword. Although it took him almost seven years to make the weapon, if Link uses it a few times it snaps in half, requiring it to be repaired by Medigoron. His brother is Biggoron who lives on the summit of Death Mountain.
Mido
Mido is the self-proclaimed leader of the Kokiri race, and refers to himself as "The Great Mido". He disliked Link, and does not accept him as a Kokiri because he does not have a guardian fairy. He does not see why Link has become the respected favorite of Saria and the Great Deku Tree.
When Link is summoned to see the Great Deku Tree, Mido is shocked by that and by the fact that Link now has a fairy companion, Navi. He stops Link from entering, and says he must have a sword and shield, and when Link returns with these items, Mido reluctantly lets him through. He later blames Link for the Great Deku Tree's death.
When Link returns seven years later as an adult, Mido does not recognize Link and refuses to let him go to the Forest Temple. After Link plays Saria's Song for him, however, he realizes that Link is one of Saria's friends and lets him pass. After Link completes the Forest Temple, awakening Saria as a Sage, Mido learns that Saria can never come home. He says she liked Link, and then asks Link whom he still does not recognize to keep a look out for the young Link whom he knew, and to tell him Mido has apologized.
Pierre
Pierre is a self-proclaimed wandering scarecrow. Early in Link's childhood, specifically before the Master Sword is raised from its pedestal, Pierre can be found rooted to the ground within a fenced tract overlooking Lake Hylia along with Bonooru. Confined to the ground due to his immobility, Pierre admits he wishes to wander freely throughout Hyrule to search for poignant tunes. A subsequent seven years reveals Pierre has fulfilled his wish to leave, although it is never explained how he accomplishes it. Adult Link can play the Scarecrow's Song on his ocarina to summon Pierre to come assist him.
Running Man
The Running Man is a man who runs around Hyrule Field when Link is a child. He stops to rest during the night, at which time Link can approach and speak to him. The Running Man says Hyrule Field was once teeming with wild rabbits, but not any longer due to "excessive hunting". When Link is an adult, he resides in a tent in Gerudo Valley. Link can race him to the entrance of the Kokiri Forest, but he always beats Link by one second.
Skull Kid
The Skull Kid is woodland fairy-type creature living in the Lost Woods who belongs to a race of the same name. They are suggested by Navi to be what Kokiri become if they get lost in the woods and cannot get back out. However, Skull Kids are not the only possible example of creatures being transformed by the woods; according to Fado, Hylians gradually become Stalfos. The Skull Kid is involved in one of the several mask trades for The Happy Mask Salesman. He purchases the skull mask from Link to impress his friends. While Skull Kid is friendly to Link when he is a child, he becomes hostile when adult Link approaches him.
The main antagonist in The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is also a Skull Kid.
Talon
Talon (タロン, Taron?) is the father of Malon and the owner and operator of Lon Lon Ranch. When Link first encounters Talon, he is asleep beside a shipment of milk he had been delivering to Hyrule Castle. After Link awakens him, he returns to Lon Lon Ranch. At some point during the seven years Link spends suspended in the Sacred Realm, Ingo, the Lon Lon Ranch farmhand, takes over the ranch and kicks Talon out.
